Resolution No. 2016-115 - Recognizing October 11, 2016 as Vin Scully Day

One year after graduating from Fordham University in 1950, Mr. Scully began his
broadcasting career with the Dodgers at the age of 22. He has experienced many
memorable moments in his career, from calling the Dodgers' first and only
championship in Brooklyn, New York to calling Don Larsen's perfect game in the World
Series. Mr. Scully has been a integral part of the Dodgers organization; his voice has
often been labeled the "soundtrack to summer" in Los Angeles, where generations of
fans have grown up listening to him call Dodgers baseball. On April 21, 2001, the press
box at the Dodger Stadium was named in Mr. Scully's honor and on January 29, 2016
the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to change the street leading to Dodger
Stadium's main entrance from Elysian Park Avenue to Vin Scully Avenue. On
October 2, 2016, Vin Scully announced his last game and ended his broadcasting
career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The City Council has the opportunity to adopt the attached resolution declaring
October 11, 2016 as Vin Scully Day in Newport Beach.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW:
Staff recommends the City Council find the adoption of the attached resolution and the
recognition of October 11, 2016 as Vin Scully Day is not subject to the California
Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Sections 15060(c)(2) (the activity will not
result in a direct or reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment)
and 15060(c)(3) (the activity is not a project as defined in Section 15378) of the CEQA
Guidelines, California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Chapter 3, because it has no
potential for resulting in physical change to the environment, directly or indirectly.
