Ia it not a shocking fact that permits for
many c:esSpools have been granted on the
Corona del Mar public bathing beach to
aemce the owners of the business build-
ings th~re and also the visiting bathers-
as many as two thousand a day in the
season?
Is not the resldence ·built many years
ago on cean "Blvd:near Larkspur Ave ..
draining ita sewage dovm the cliffs by a
larqe visible se w er p ipe into a be a ch cess-
·poot. built under a "temporary" permit.
many. many years ago?
Is it not a fact that no othe r cesspool
permits in Newport anywhere except these
on the 'Oc:ean level near enough the wa-
ter's edge for pollution--and bathers' use-
have been granted since INST AIJ.A noN
of sewers?
But remember what "temporary"
means if you have lriends in the City Hall.
Or if you wish to bathe in the ocean.
Thursday evening. Nov. 16. you may
hear how our stateamen explain how ceas-
poola located practically at the water'&
edge cannot pollute the bathing water. al-
though sea water baa ruined many line
wells two miles from the beach by infiltra-
tion. Hear our veteran statesmen explain
why water in ce•pools near the beach
rises and lalla with the tide.
Come early and get a good seat.
* * *
A petition signed by 118 names
aqainst granting of the cliff acce• road
below Ocean Blvd in Corona del Mar was
obtained by one man in one day. but had
no more effect on our City Hall atatelmen
than water on a duck·a back--althouqh it
is admitted that ninety-five per cent of the
property owners in Corona del Mar are
.
'
against the Cliff road scheme. and resent
the ruin of the finest pomenade view in or ·
near the Newport Beach area.
It is simply inconceivable that any pro-
pe rty owner knowing the facta would sign
a petition that the Council present "free city
land of great value. and allow property
owners to be threat~ed_with a Joss..o! Yiew
and great damage' ro their own property
if they did not "sign up.··
Worlc on this plan should be stopped
until a committee of our best"citizens--con-
taining none of our City Hall statesmen-
-can uncover the real facta of this cliff road
plan. Threatened property owners . who.
in lear of damage to their property. have
signed a petition in favor of the proJect.
Should be told that· no group of our local
statesmen. working in sympathetic co-op-,
eration with the cliff project. can injure
them. . The courts will protect them later.
And aow they should be . on the aide of
preservation of our city's most beautiful
view promenade.
But come to the City Hall Thunday
evening. Nov. 16. The Plcmninq Commis-
sion will be there. and they too can hear
the veteran statesmen re.ponsible lor the
beach oil lease. the decorative plan of
China Cove. and the encouragement of
slot machines as educating children how-to
play qames of chance. ·
Watch them shrug oil a menace or nui-
sance by eaying '.'it's only temporaay."
Then nKrlize what "tempOral y" hem meant
to our lawmakers. and what it means to
you-with Polio around the comer. and
ready to come in.
And the beat feature of it alL is that
there will be no eharqe for admiasion. The
explanations of our stclte811ND should pro-
duce a rare evening•• entertainment.

O n th e cost of medical care
il •
f I ,
#
Many of the current prolo~ discu!sioru on the
high cost of medical care are withou t foundation.
Altho~ it iJ true that drugs and medical eervioes
cost more aow than they wd ten yean •· the rise
in 'COSt has not been out of proportion to the incre.ase
in the prioea of other commoditie3 and aervioes. The
cost of a pby ician's call is no pater than that of
a plumber or an electriciAn. The cost of the rnedi·
cine he prescribes is no higher than the ooet of a
nke, a fa ucet, or an dectricaJ outlet. Moreover, it
must be reme~~bered that money cannot buy good
health. lt is prioeless. No 6ner, no more econom1cal,
no more efticient sys~em of medical care hu ever
been devised than that wliich this nation now enjo71.
