ACOlDEHT 'PiONitNESS
Dear Mrs. Smith:
In your letter you s~st aome s~ that S. F'r'eud rted
from his discussion of self sug-
gest that accldenta are oft n the
results of unconscious motiva-
tions. He says that some real
people seem to be accident prone;
that is, they have one accident
after another whereas other peo-
ple ne~ have 'll.oeiMnts.
It is true that sttltist.b for any
large group of industrtal workers
show that a minority of people
have a high accident record year
after ,.ear. Freud maintained
that people, without knowing It,
"dl"ag their feet." They uncon-
sciously rebel against their work,
or else they are dj,atracted by
overwhelming p r o b 1 e m s which
cause them t o be chronically care-
less. Sometimes Ufe ltaelf seems
to be more of a liability than an
asset. A friend or mine went hunt-
ing with a man who liked to see
how far he could lean backwards
over a railroad trestle. Even-
tually he committed suJcide with
a gun.
One study has shown that acci-
dent repetition sometimes comes
from a low degree of emotional
and in te 11 e c t u a 1 integration.
Worry or fear or too hlgh elation
takes a person's mind from what
he is doing. The main cai..LSetl of
diatnlctlon were (a ) plant worries,
(b) home difficulties, (C) fatigue
and lack of sleep. < 4 ) periodic
emotioN.ll disturbances.
Causes other than those which are strictly .psychological arc lack
of proper nourishment, causing fa-
tigue. poor training, too fast a rate
of production. poor ilium ina tion.
lack of safety features on ma-
chines, poor physical coordination.
With on-the-job training in
safety fea tures the accid<'nt rate
can be greatly reduced. O!der
employees as a group ha vc less
hazardous slips than do the n<'wlv
hired ·ones. However there ar(>
those individuals who vear aftc.>r
year continue to make t'rips to till'
hospital. It is these indi\'iduals
that Freud is talking about. They
may find their job too monoton·
ous. ,,;sh another occupation, e\'l'll
have an unconscious wish !or self
d~truction. Freud wTote about
many other things than sex. His
de velopment of unconscious moti·
vation is one or the great contri·
butions to modem think ing.
Next week this column will be
devoted to a discussion o! a na-
ture of unconscious motivatio ns. • • •
