The appUcation of L. S. Hoff-
man of China Cove to build a sea
waU on waterfront property he
owns in China Cove wes denlt'd by
City Council Monday evening, a nd
Mr. Hoffman indicated he would
seek court act ion to Coree the city
to grand his rt>quest.
The propt>rty in question In-
cludes Jots 7. 8. 14 and 15, Block
C-33, adjoining the China House.
These four lots. mostly under wa-
ter. wen> originaUy included in the
China Cove public beach plan to
acquire 14 Jots. for which the late
Sl monthly water assessment was
levied. The other 10 lots have
been purchased by the dty.
Mr. Hoffman's request bad been
denied by tbe Harbor Commission.
and CounciJ upheld that denial on
the grounds that a sea wall would
cause wave action which might
wub away some of the adjoining
public beach owned by the dty.
''You can't deny mt-the use of
my property without compensa-
aon," Mr. Hoffman said, explain-
Ing that he could not build on hl.s
Jots unless the sea wall ls con-
structt>d. "You're throwing me
Into court," he addt>d.

PALM TREE PRUNING
COMPLAINT I S MADE
The case of the drastic pruning
of Marguerite Ave. palm trees in
Corona del Mar was brought to
the official attention of City Coun-
cil Monday evening in a letter
from Mrs. Margaret W. Barnes of
512 Marguerite 'Ave., who pleaded,
"Please help us save the trees."
City Manager John Sailors said
he .had checked with Park Super·
intendent MacDonald and had been
infonned that the pruning had
been extreme In so.me cases, but
that no irreparable harm had been
done. because the palrfl trees come
bac)c pretty fast.
