This week I attended with Mark
Healy, Kenneth Morgan and Bud
Hansen from the Island Mark,
ever the thoughtful host, seated
me apart from Bud, who l.s still
gunning for me ever sinct' I rna·
lit.'Jied him In thi.\t ooJumn by say-
Ing that he did not know the orl·
gin of the expression, "May Day",
when in reaUty, he has known the
meaning, origin and significance
since 1918 when he was a very
little boy.
Doctor SaJvatore Monaco was
acclaimed for catching hls first
marlin after six years of trying.
Dr. Monaco, stili suffering from a
severe attack of buck fever, ac-
knowledged the tribute by mak-
ing a plea. a fervent plea, that all
future marlin, after being brought
to gaff, be reJeased. His case was
based upon the beauty of the fish,
and the soul-ful look in Its eye.
His proposal did not fall upon
unsympathetic ears; it seemed a
St'nsible plan to most men in the
room, but I am sure that all of
t h e professional photographers
will fight the plan to the death.
Telephone Ted Hambrook told
of his cruise off the Pacific Coast
of Canada and through the Inland
Passage this summer. H1s descrlp.
tion of the beauty or the land, the
myriads of inunenae fish whlch
were caught on bare hooks and the
ease with which clams and crabs
are caught sent every one of his
listeners back to their occupa-
tions very discontented men.

cessfully completed her first tests.
The yacht is 60 feet long with a
14-ft. 9-inch beam-and has a top
cruising spei>d of 15 miles per
hour. She can turn in less than
two lengths at top speed. The
builders, Grimston Astor Ltd., say
that s he has a two-way tension
system of ronstruction. The sides
are formed of light alloy sheets
pulled into shape after being joined
on the flat, giving them extra
strength. The buBders claim that
the light construction makes for
low maintenance costs and fast

Here's how oil weDs are drilled ·
from shore to a mile or more
out under the ocean
HOE'S THE BACKGROUND
The rkhness of the oil sands at H untington ~ch
caused violently inte~ competition among drilling
o~ratioos in the 1920's.
When some wells began reachio& out from shore
w o the tidelands, the Attomey ~neraJ of Californin
6ltd foe an injunction apinst furth~ drilling because
ol me legal status of off-shore wdls.
In 1938, the State Lands Act was adopted ;, cwtk~
lo /ffewm J~lli,..ge of slllltt oil by f>Nvllle internls.
All oil compani~ were invired to submit bids for the
tideland o~rations on a sliding-scale r oyalry b:~sis
( t~ more oil, the higher the royalty to the state),
and tM Southwest Exploration Company e~rged as
the successful bidd~.
~ problems were mwy, as t~ science of con-,
c:rolled dir«tional d rilling was in its infancy. Ttoeh-
niques and equipment d~eloped in this o~ation
ba~ attracted world-wide in~rcst, DCX ooly in the
l)il industry bur ~ng the millions of people who
rim~ by the location ~ery year.
HOW A WELL IS SlANTED
Tntt a.tlly, a tideland well IS drilkd straight down f(l!
.1prroximately 100 fef!r. To deA«t the hole ·graduallr
from vertical and out roward rhe ocean, a wedge-like
dev1ct", called a whipsrock, is used. When placed in t~
JC5ired posicion on rhe landsidc of the hole, it forces
rhe bit into a nt""'. dnllins direcuon, tow11rJ Jbc CJetan.
After the new direction is started, the amount or
degree of rhc bend can be increased or decreased by
varying the weightS and rotational speeds to the bit.
The angle may be as much as 75 • deviation from
"ertical.
During the drilling, a photographic instrument is
placed in the bottom of the hole to ~rd t~ dir«-
tion and angle of the well at that point. ~ pictUre
taken shows a compass reading (showing direction)
a.od a ball or plumb boO positioo (showing the devia-
tioo. from •eniaJ).
fACH WILL IS SCIINJIFICAU Y PL.OnED
These readings are us.ed to plot the exact location of
each well all the way down. Accuracy is a.ll-importanc
as the tidelands have become a ... ol bate ......
with Stef!l a.sing reaching far out aDder cbe --..
At the stan, the sref!l casing from c.-1INI II Jilt
a few feet away from anoth~, but wbm c.-II ..,.
plete<l, it is hundreds of fC'f!t away &c. die ..
next to it.
A well that is vertically 4500 feet bdow the_..
of the ocean may have a drilled depth of 8000 '-
from its point of origin on the shore.
Al~r the well has been drilled to its destiftatioo
above the oil sand, heavy pi~ alled cuing is run
all the way down to the boctom, ftuid ce.meot is
pumped down throuah the ca,ing and up all around
it oo the outside. 'Ibis is dooe to make swe DO water
ot outside dements can gee into the oil suds, as this
would do serious harm.
ntl FINAL STEP
A hole is drilled through the cemeot inside the casing
a.od on to the bottom of the oil sand. A smaller pipe,
with perfontions, is then run opp<»ite the oil sands
to prOtt"ct the bore hole and to permit oil to enc~
the well. Pumps lift the on to surface iostaUations on high,
dry ground, far bade from the shoreltne. Meanwhile,
oo the beach, bathers and picnic parries continue to
enjoy the surf and sand. entirely obliviou.s to the wells
far below them.
FRIE FOl.DER
U nder a beautiful bathing beach are more than 300
wells pumping oil from far out under che ocean. Roy-
alties from these wells have provided money for beach
improvementS, r«reational purpost"S, veterans' welfare,
and the general fund. Allo millions of dollars hne
been paid in county and municipel taxes, plus millions
more in mte and Federal taxes. If you would lillie a
colorful, iUusuated folder showing how tbae welk
are d rilled and opera~d without marring cbe be.c:b
facilities, we will be glad to supply you,FllBB ol ClOWa

Oil Royalties Provide

Under California Jaw. land within the thtef!-mile
