A good friend ot tt.hingJ\U just
come home from the hospital. It
haa something to do with wrestl-
Ing a cake of ice on a slippery
deck. When Lowe Breer hits the
deck, something haa to GIVE. This
time it was Lowe. and for a while
he was In our beautJful new Hoag
Memorial Hospital, but is now
back home at 1.205 N. Bay Front,
Balboa Island .
1t would be a mighty fine thing
if everyone who haa enjoyed the
competitions for the fabulous priz-
es that Louie has made posaible
would taxe a minute to send him a
card. If we were in· bed. these
cards would be better than a trans-
fusion. How about it, you guys
and gals who fish? • • •
Last week I tried again, Thurs-
day and Sunday. With emphasis,
I can tell you that the marlin are
still here. They're more consider-
ate this week. however. Instead
of having to run away over to Cat-
alina. twenty minutes on 240 de-
grees puts you in fish. That was
on Thursday, a day on the LADY
MARGARET, with Gordon We-
vill. young old-timer who operates
a fine fishing-tackle emporium on
Balboa Island. "AJ" Payne of Em-
erald Bay left his "TISH" tied up
and joined the party. Sam<' old
s tory. For a change we had live
mackerel. It didn't matter. I had
two beautiful strikes-both with
tl'l'th. I still find it puzzling to
und<'rstand how a clumsy. slow-
IX'<·d shark can beat aJJ those su-
fl('r-fast marlin to the bait. nut
for me, they'll do it e\·ery time.
Th<' longer marlin stick around

Only twiet> in the last six seasons
have marlin bN>n caught later
than this dat('. Usually, by now,
t he marlin have gone to wherever

Th(' kids cam" home with two rib-

Kay Finch and Frank Jordan de-
cided that any pet that needed a

Last Sunday found me on the
water again, hope renewed. This
time with Norm Begg, local manu-
facture r of fine rods, roU er guides
and that super-albacore lun>, the
plastic "saury." Frequent fishing
pardner "Walt" Balderston made
up the trio. We felt hopeful with
Norm along. For years he skip-
pered for most of the great names
in fishing. Nor did the marlin dis-
appoint us. There were just as
many, a little further off-shore, a
few miles down t he coast. They
hadn't changed a bit. W e enjoy-
ed the sun, the scenery, the good
company, the sweet -performing
twin dJesela on the great 55' Steph-

of the day, we ha d had one or the
very finest boat rides or the year-

I N 1949, 1,763,290 people land~ in the penitentiary; 719,515 mental patients in
hospita ls; 386,000 in divorce courts; 16,354 committed suicide. All these people
wanted to be happy but they took the wronA way. They thumbed their nose at the
faithful guard trying to stop them and never saw the warning si&n, "BRIDGE OUT!"
Byron said, "The thorns I reap a re of the tree I planted; they have tom me, and I
bleed." The way that seemetb right is the way of death. God'• hi'hway is marked by
brotherhood, reverence, virtue and ~ll·control. Time iJ precioua. Better follow that
guiding band ... jesus said "I am the way, follow me." See you in church.

Electricity ~ today's biggest
bargain-the figures prove it!
Considering 1939 the base year, the dollar bought only forty
ce nts worth of labor last year, forty-three cents worth of
construction, or thirty cents worth of raw materials-but it
bought $1.12 cents worth of industrial electric power. Ip your
home, that dollar bought only forty-four eenU! worth of food.
forty-nine cents worth of clothing or eeventy-four cents worth
of r ent-but it bought $1.05 worth of electricity.
The figures are national averages released by the
National Industrial Conference Board. They show that the
one great exception to the upswing in prices is your electric
service. In Edison territory, electric service is an even
greater bargain than the national average8 indicat&..
