Costa !\lesans "i ll be makin$:1 an --rmportanl-ded fan-

of Costa Mesa. or annex to Newport Beach and form the
City of N€'wport Harbor. Th(' other altematives-rem~in
ing unincorpora1.ed. or annexing to Santa Ana or Hunting-
ton Beach--must be ruled oot as entirely unsatisfactory.
1\fany remarks han" J:>e.en made--some seriously, some
not-about the advisabilit y of annexing to Newport Beach.
On the facetious side is the remark like this: "We've I;Ot
plenty of rascals ri .... ht here in Costa Mesa: why tic in with
the crooks in New~rt Beach:·· I don't believe that "crooks"
and "dirtv politics'' are the fundamental issue at all. Both
Costa MeSa and Newport Beach ha"-e their fair share and
adequate quota of good, honest folks.
Some say: "Ll't's staY~ a.s "We are h('re in Costa Mesa!'
Fine-dream, but ~'Oll might just as weB ask the earth to
stand still. This is one of the fastest growin g areas in the
11. S .. and the big boom hasn't even started. The new prob-
J.roms: arising out of growth should be handled by a govern-
ing body in which the Costa Mesans have a direct voice-:-
not merely by a board of supenisors in Santa Ana.
Some say: "Let's incorporate in June, and later we can
gel together with Newport Beech to fonn one big dty."
That may appear to be Rn ~ compromi!JC solution.
but who will say that he honestly belleves it would be prac--
Ucally possible or politicaiJy feasible!

(Qon.Un~l from Page 11 truth. However , my ire was up to the degree that r wtl)te
that it was a tie. That pleased the pubtic mightily. A friend
of mine commented: "Good fight. That's the first' time
that Hop ha.•.; ever made a positive statement." Tha,t
statement by my friend must not be the troth. I look back
over 4 V:! years of writing the weekly Log, and each ~ne
has.posit:ive;.statements reflecting the ~tilnda~ and prm-
ciples ·and · moral guides that have always d1rectCfi the
policies of this newspaper. Only trouble is-too polite, and
not enough four-letter words.
Every now and then someone ~ys to mE'. "U o~l¥ I
had thf' opportunity or running a ne\VS(laPt'r and Y.TJtmg
its editorials. I'd really show them ... I'd really blast the
scoundrels:· It must be these same guys-and doUs, too
-who l"t'Quest publishers to take violent stapds on this or
that, and who arc mightily incensed when the publisher
is disinclined to do so. Favorite eXj)ression or these critics
is: "So Y04 don't have the guts to take a stand on this ...
or to print this." That doesn't rile me t&.ny more. I of-rer
them all this privilege: "Write a letter to the editor ud
explain your viewpoint.~; sipt your name to the letter. Uld
I'll be glad to publish it.'" That ends it; ALMQST wrni-
OtiT EXCEP11:0~. that's the la.!.."l I hear about the idea.
AU this provE'S a point : n ·s easy enough to shoot off
vour mouth about some real or fancied wrong, alx>ut so-and-~ on the City Council. about SlJCh-and-such "de~l."
But get a pen in hand, or sit down in front of a typewr1ter
-and the loud mouth becomes tongue-tied. Well that it
should be so. Whpn you seck to put. your thoughts into
the written word, you rn n bf'gin to apprPCiale oomething
of the responsibility or the editor and publisher, who every
day is putting down wor·ds and thoughts a nd opinions on
paper to remain in public rerord forever. These words at"e
there artc1· the heat or a nger has subsided, and you can't
erase a tine. Publishing a newspaper cannot be used as
exruSP ror venting personal spleen and vindictiveness; it is
a public t 11.1-"t and responsibility of the highest order, and
no wheedling or needling or hailing will alter that course
for tht" Ensign. • • • * LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ·•
Receiving letters to the editor is alw::ays a hi~h point
il"!"'ft day's occupation. Of course, there are many that are
far from complimentary, but there also are plenty that
make up for the rough ones. H'ere arc a. few acknowledge-
ments-To Jean nnd Cornelh•s Steclink: A very un-neigh-
borly letter f1-om .my across-the-alley neighbors in Corona
del Mar~ Glad t o say that I don't share your Jack of fnlth
in the Ensign's future; the T1'COrd is agin' you. You have
discovered the one sure way to get. my dandi"r up, and
that is to cast aspersion on "thf' integrity of the Ensign. I
have alwnys been willing to fight fnr what I hold to be dear
to me. All I ask of my critics is that they can say the
same ... To Mrs. H. K. Gifford of Newport: Thanks for
deciding to kP-ep reading u.~ a little longer, and to ''see what
gives" ... To Mrs. Elsie Beebe Silzle of Fullerton: Thanks.
Such a letter as yours mak~S all this struggle worth while.

Multiple Listnin'
Getting houses and lots to sell
themselves is the ultimate aim of
Stan Hadfield, Marine Avenue
realtor on Balboa bland. Last
week he decided to let the cus-
tomers write their own ads
(nothing laz;y about Stan), be-
cause words failed him to de-
eribe such a super house with a
sale price-tag. The proapective
buyers fooled him, however,
'cause the first one who came to
write the ad bought the house! • • •
Mrs. Linwood Vick is currently
