We saw a lot of fins. And bait.
And birds. But the fins all bc-
lonRed to nice Sf'ts of teeth. We
decided to meet those San Diego
marlin halfway. So the F oray
cruised on l 35 degrees. On and
c n. Somcthang kept pulling ua
toward S.D. First thing we
kn<'w, we were off La Jolla. All
unpremt>dhated, mind you, e"·en
if Mrs. R. and Mr~. C.Q. won't
beli<'Vt' it. Then we passed a
crulst>r heading wide open toward
Newport She flew a large blue
flag with a white fish on it. It
was the Clock 0 . Forest Smith.
Yes, ht> had one aboard. They'd
befon troiUn.~t a Honolulu feather
and a rubtx-r squid. Double hook-
up. Only one angler available.
Broke off the one on the squid
and caught the other one. Yep,
>n the Honolulu feather . But 2250
RPM wu all we rould do.
e NORTH ISLAND
We 1igh~d the big chocolate
drop that is the North Coronado
Island. By then it was 4 o'clock.
11le air was aeelhlng with talk.
Mostly bt>twcen boats from here.
Bert Devere had a 3-0 fish on
the Feather. Merle (Beany) Af-

Not on the Schoolboy but on the

The nlcht came too eoon. We

We ~ill had a tankful of nice

W<' could do was back up to Mr.

e HOME AGAIN
I should get a mar lin soon. On
the way back to Newport with
Johnny. I sat next to Mr. Luek
himself. It was Butch Lopera
from Carden Grove. He's the
King Midas of marlin fishing.
Everything he touches turns into
fish. lf you don't believe me,
