Metro.,P.Olitan Coach Lines has embarked on a six-year pro-
gram of dl vclf>pment and improvement. This program, once
i& approved by f4l public bodies, wiU provide the mos_t rapid
u .......... mau tran.~por1atum in the l/nited Slates or Canada.
~ MINUTE RUN REDUCED TO 36 MINUTES
One illustration is the Hollywood Freeway. Formerly, the time
from North Hollywood to downtown Los Angeles by rail was
64 minutes. Bus substitution, with equal seating capacity,
reduced the time by 14 minutes, using the compJeted portion of
the Hollywood Freeway. Now, with the remaining secti ons
available, we will save another 9 minutes-and still another
5 minutes, through a change in downtown routing. Thus, we
will have a total elapsed time of about 36 minutes from North
Hollywood. (It has already been necessary to increase the buses
on this run from 17 to 30 to handle increased patronage.)
FASTER SERVICE TO ALL AREAS
Metro is now giving much improved service to Norwalk, Santa
Ana and Orange over the Santa Ana F~ay. The Ramona
Freeway is being utilized for people east of }As Angeles. 1Qe
Holly wood Boulevard expresa, operating over the Hollywood
rree-.r.y, willuve 15 minutes over the present rail schedule.
With buses replacing raU service, the Hollywood and Harbor
Freeways will reduee tlme aubstantially for the Glendale-
Burbank line. Lone Beeeh Mrvice will operate over the Long
Beach Freeway when that ls completed.
FASTIR THAN NIW YORK'S SUBWAYS
The freetr..ays planned for this area lend themselves to mass
rapid 1nnlit. As an lnterestinc eomparison, tb~ New York sub-
way hu a maximum apeed of 30 miles per hour, and an average
speed of18 miles per hour. ~etro coaches on freeways make the
same inuimum apeed u automobiles, about 55 miles per hour.
We do eonliderably better than New YOI'k. and actually, no other
American dty hu our advantqa for fast transportation.
