e A TREMENDOUS VICTORY
Lest you forget . . thot wos o tremendous voctory jutt won by
Corona del Mor in the compoign to keep ots first class Post Offoce.
It wos won against formidable odds ... the U.S. Post Office De-
partment ... a clique in Newport, supported by a number of di-
rectors of the Newport Harbor Cha mber of Commerce , and by the
Newport newspaper.
Against these odds stood an energel1c Chamber of Commerce
of our own ... a united community with enthusiastic support of its
citizens . ~~nd a newspoper the Ensign
There are lessons to be leorned in this victory.
• It refutes the defeotist ottitude of the faint-of-heart who
bemoan, ·Who! s the use."' ond give up before storting to fight.
• It teaches the heortenong lesson that our government. even
way out there in Washington. WILL listen to insostent crtizens who
hove a good argument.
• It shows the great volue of a local Chamber of Commerce.
onterested ellclus.vely on home t., .... ., problems and ready to wor~ hard
ond stubbornly for the benefit of the home commvnoty.
• It os proof of the tremendous value of the home town news
paper. in tho s case your own En~·gn, because it is the local newspaper
thot 1S the ralfy,,.g point n compo gns for betterment of our town.

I believe tho• the grass roots edolors of the notio n have o
tremendous responsibolity. Newspopers are among the le oders o f opin-

to find that almost a majority of the editors enswerinq the poll failed
to see the peril on subsodies and in federal aod to education. (Or worse
yet, perhops they ~now the danger. but li~e the handouts more than
