A letter from a Corona del Mar mother to City Council Monday
evening brought forth some thought provo~ing comments on parental
duty and responsibility.
Mrs. F. Romero asked for a law to pro~de that porentol consent
be required before boots con be rented to minors. Her reoson wos
thot her son, age II ond unoble to swim, hod rented o boot with a
14-yeor-old friend
Councilmon Stonley R1dderhof remorked. · It's the porents' prob·
lem to get their children to leorn to swim." S.,id Councilmon Lee
Wilder, We con t legislote porentol core, guidonce ond troining."
Acting Moyor Joy Stoddord commented, "We con't wet nurse the
children by possing lows.
Some folks will soy those are horsh stotements. But those words
surely pock o lot of sense. Shirking of responsibility seems to be o
growing notionol offliction. It is evident in porents' attitude toword
their children, ond 1n the citizens' feelings toword their government.
This poss-o-low· sentiment reflects o surrender of pe~onol inill·
otive and responsibility Let the government toke core of it ' is com·
ing to be the onswer to more ond more problems. Let the govern
ment toke core of me is the ult.mote result. and we ore perilously
for olong on thot road.
It moy seem to be for fetched to tol~ obou t o letter o., boot
rentals and end up with talk about surrendering our duties to b1g
government But the connect1on IS there. And we ore surrendering o
bit of freedom along with the responsibility.

Planning Commls.~lon
City of Newport Beach
Clty Hall
Newport Beach. California
Gentlemen:
A study of the Master Plan for
the City ot Newport Beach as
submitted by Hahn, Wtw lr As-
sociates shows numerous factual
errors In the basic data used tor
the compUatlon ol thla plan
In conversation with various
officials I was Informed that
these errors are due to the use
of Inexperienced temporary help
by Hahn It Wise Cor the cather·
lng ot the (actual data.
The concluslora r~ached are
obviously based prlm.artly on
these. erroneous facts. All the
forecasts are an extel'POiatlon ot
these facts. It would a ppear
futile to discuss or accept a plan
based on Incorrect Information.
I would strongly recomm~nd
thiit Hahn It Wise be lnetructed
to correct these errors and am-
mend their recommendations u
necessary before any ser1ous dla-
cusslon of thla plan be under-
taken. Failure to do 80 mlel'lt
very well lud to the dl.lc:ardlng ot the plan u a whole.
Very truly youra,
