e A VOYAGE ON THE GOODWILL
Some of us land·lubbers stepped 'foot off solid C¥0und on the
Fourth of July to qo ab04rd tne schooner Goodwill ond see the start
of the Honolulu race. Our hostess was a spry sailorette. Mrs. lonnie
Vincent, and the qood ship Goodwill was 104ded with staff members
of the various Vincent druq sto~s. plus an assortment of ne wspoper
folh. Reason was that Vincent boss·man Lonnie was crewing on Ly·
man Farwell s Seadnft. and we were to bid tnem oil bon voyage for
that long race to Honolulu. ,
Our own start from the Harbor was somewhot less thon auspic·
ious. Just as the Goodwill was d ear of the county dod, she heoded
straight toward a boat slip near Rosen's. A line was in the water. and
Owner.Skippor Ralph Lorrabee hesitated to throw the ship in reverse
for feor of fouling the prppoller. When the order was qiven, it wos
rust too late to halt the forword motion in time, and the Goodw1ll
caused some damage to two boots in the slip.
There was wisecradmg obo11rd: Well, we got those two boots
oil r ght-now for the Pioneer! · And indeed. the Goodwill wos bad·
1ng directly toward the schooner Pioneer. but she swunq around
w1thout further m1snap. and we were off for the Harbor entrance, and
then up the c04st toward ~he Long Beoch breakwater
We left the coonty dod about 8: IS in the mornmq. and arrived
near the storting line at the st11rting time of high noon I $0y neor
because you rust don I get up dose' to the line. The SO•c.alled spec·
lode of the Honolulu race is downright disappomting for us who
hove seen so ma ny times the start of the bi9qest ocean rec.e 1n the
worl~ur own Newport Harbor to Ensenada classic. Last Thursday
there was none of the thrill of that tremendous concentratton of
sails that we have right at our doorstep for the Ensenada race
But then. it wasn't the Honolulu race that was the biq attraction:
it was the Goodwill herself. To us whose nautical expe rience has been
limited pretty larqely to rowboats. the Goodwill is tremendous.
Lenq th is lbl feet ~tt the wo ter line ; 187 from bowsprit to stern plate ;

for Spaldinq of sporting 9oods fame. She's o gaff.riqged schooner.
two-masted, biqqest on the wen coast. She holds the record for the
fastest elapsed time for the Honolulu roce. a record made in 1953.
e A TIP ON SOLVING THE PUZZLE
Last wee~·s puzzle in the loq has c.aus.d a little commotion, some
1uqgestions for solvinq it, and e lot of queriM. You recall it has to do
with locating an off.weiqht penny amonq I I qood ones of equal
weight. You were to do it in three weighings on balance scoles. and
find out if the bod penny is heavy or light

T ryinq to get on and off Sol boo Island last wee~·end brought
me to th1s conclus1on on locat1on of the lslond fire hall · It 1s simply
preposterous to cla1m thot a fi re rig off the Island can get on the
