e TAXES CAN • ltEOUaD
My neighbor on Jaunine Ave" Henry Ve rfurth, offers some com-
ments on local taxes, which h. conside~ pre tty high compared with
South Gate, where he also owns property.
He writes: "The property I own in South Gate is appro ximately
the same as my property in Corona del Mar. My taxes on Corona
del Mar property ore neorly twice os much as on the South Gt~te
property.''
A long with his letter he sent in o story from the South Gate
Press. announcing thot toAes for 1957-58 are being reduced 52 cents--
from $1. I 5 down to 63 cents. The news item included these observa·
tions
The action of the South Gote City Council in cutting the tax
levy nearly in ha lf is believed to be setting o precedent 1n the stote
and perhops e ven •n the notion. It proves thot the City of South Gote
hos an efficient ond economocal form of government without denying
itse lf Mything that other cities may hove.
'The mayor said that the tax reduction is in keeping with the
policy of the City Council in asking only for the money thot is needed
to operate the city e fficiently.'
SO\ Newport Beach C.ty Council, please note: T a• reduction IS
possible !
• •
e GITY COUNCIL ACTS WISELY
The City Council took o step in the right direction Monday night
by postponing the "death clause in the penny arcade ordinance for
3 months. This will give the Council and the arcode operators in Balboa
time to come up with a reasonable ordinance that will not arbitrarily
outlow long-established and legitimate businesses. W hatever you may
think of penny arcades, you must realize thot o dangerous precedent
would be established if a b usiness CM be destroyed by o Council
majority.
