e ENEMY OF CHURCHES TOO?
Here s a memo to my critics. of whom there appear to be some
as a result of recent right-to-wer~ Logs:
I am not an e nemy of churches because I am agoinst moking
church me~bership a requirement for keepin g a job. I am not out to
wreclt serv1ce dubs becouse I favor keeping membership in such clubs
stnc•ly vo~untary. I am not o union buster because I soy that union
membershrp should not be a condition for employment.
If o church, or dub, or union connot exist without forced mem·
bers~ p. t~en i! does not d eserve to su_rviv_e . In each case, voluntary
~emoersh•p wrll str~ngthen the organ1zat1on, because it promotes
rmprovement of serv1ces so that new members will join. That is the
bas•s of strength of a free society. • • •
• "WE KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU"
Mark these on your calendar: More controls and more reg~etions
are being devised by our public servants in City Holl. There's that sign
ordinance, coming up for finol hearing by the Planning Commission
this evening (Thursdoy) in City Hall. If you don't go there to speak
Y.our piece, you're apt to walce up wit~ a !.Cream one day when you
f1nally become awore of the new drastic restrictions. Thot happened
with l;cense fees not so long ago.
Then there will be a brand new squeeze soon. The Newport City
Covncol storied the little wheels turning Monday night toward the
goal of requinnq off-street parking for all business areas. How would
you solve that demand. Morine !\venue on Balboa Island? Or Coast
Highway in Corona del Mar?
These developmenh are indicators of the growing disdain for the
freedom of rndividuols to make mistakes. These schemes are the in
ev:table ~ymptoms of the we lcnow whofs good for you malady
that '-'Oner or later afflrcls oil public servants.
Freedom of chorce is one of our essential rights. It implies the
freed"m to make mistakes. arrd the responsibility of suffering the
con•equence• When you meddle with these elements. you ore knod-
inq •he balance wheel of o free society out of kilter.

Ray Cannon. nble tlsh student

Bevers, this-away. He should
know better. Last week I had a
call from Bill Pigg, Balboa Island
marlin maestro and no fooling.

out of La Paz. The proof he pre·
sented wu that they caught a

flculty, 3 leaders!
With the marlin season ap-
proaching, and with the releas-
Ing and tag,tng movement ott
to a fine start last sea.son. It's
well to have such Indisputable
facts on hand. Don't let anyone
tell you that the marlin you re·
lease has no chance of survlal.
It's strictly a lot of baloney.
Incidentally. Lee Jonas, over
at the Balboa Angling Club, has
marlin tagging equipment from
the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution for any of you who
want to help In this interesting
research project. If the s upply
gives out, Lee can tell you how
to get more.
And -don't forget to look
YOUR marlin over carefully for
tags! Wood's Hole has upped the
reward from a one time one buck
to five! But that's a lot less In·
terestlng than being the first to
report a tagged fish. One heck
of a lot of 'em were tagged In
Mexico In 1957 and early 1958.
The tags are plastic tubes about
one-eighth Inch In diameter,
some amber. some yellow. They
look like a worm when they be·
come covered with algae. So-o -o.
don't be the early bird that
thinks a tag Is a worm!

As you know. postage rates are going
up on August 1st from 3c to 4c. We would
U.ke to take this opportunity to remind all
of our cus1omers who mail their bill pay-

the envelope.
Since there is a penalty of 5c on cdl
letters on which there is i.nsuf.ficient pos-

1.250,000 mail payments each month. you
can see that a shortage of posiOCJe oo tbeee
