tack on Pearl Harbor. Col Smith
had Oown from Hawaii to the
Philippines with a flight of B-
17s. He left Manila Nov. 27 by
boat, and was at ~a near New
Guinea when he heard of the
attack. His wife (the former
Florence Beach of Ann Arbor,
whem he had married In 19151
wa<~ at Wh~ler Field, near
HIC'kam, when the Japanew
bombers struck. She held a Red
Cr'OS8 card. and lmm~iately
went on duty to care for the
wounded. Col . Smlttt,as ~ck in
Hawaii 9 days later, and they
stayed in the Islands for 2 more

Tragedy came to the Smiths,
for they lost both of their sons
In plane C'rashes. Capt. Bob died
In a B 24 explosion nea r El Paso,
Texas, In Augus t, 1943, just a
month after comlnc back from
ove~as combat duty. Major Bill
was killed In November, 1946,
when h is B-25 bomber went to
pieces In an unreported turb·
ulence In the air near Ft. Worth,
Texas.
Both boys had attended their
dad'a Alma Mater. Bill was first
team right taclue on the 1937-38·
39 Mlchlpn teams, and Bob was
substitute right tackle in 1940
Both were B-17 bomber pilots in
the Pacific during World War II,
holding between them 17 cita·
tlons. They had nown together
on one mlulon -In the Battle
of Midway -flying out of
Hickam Field, where their dad
wu then atatloned. .
Col Smith hlmself was a flier,
havtng taken hla training 'way
back In 1920. One of his prized
accornpllahmenta was wlnnlnc
the National Winter Air Tourna-
ment In Long Beach on Dec. 26,
1920, ln a Jenny training plane.
Many yeara later he learned that
one of the ntera he beat was
Theo Roblns, now the Ford deal-
er In Newport Beach.

turned to the States from Hawaii.
they brought back with them

then Just an Infant. They Jived
first on Balboa Island, where
they had made their summer
home at 330 Coral Ave. since
1927. Later they bought property
In Corona del Mar and built on
Ocean Blvd., next to the 3400
Ocean Blvd. address, and In 1948
they built the present residence,
at the comer of Marigold Ave.
