There are a lot of Legionnaires of Newport Har-
bor Post 291 who need their heads knocked together,
not too slightly. At the Post meeting last week they
were like a bunch of ill-tempered kids scrapping
over the frosting bowl.' Maybe it's because they're
having it too good; too nice a Legion Hall. too mag-
nificent a bayfront location, plus remunerative boat
slips, and, above all, a liquor bar.
It appears to me that the true purpose of the
Legion has been lost. I joined Post 291 because I be-
lieve in the Legion ideals of preserving Americanism.
love of cquntry, and the comradeship among former
servicemen. It is time that the local Legion officials
stop acting like Dead End Kids and start conducting
Legion affairs like grown-ups. They ARE dispens-
able, after all, and that might be a fine idea . at that.
The Post membership is still the ultimate governing
body. I believe 1t will take the appropriate action if
the nonsense conhnues.

• UNFAIR ORDINANCE IS PROPOSED
The county planning commissioners paid no
heed to the protests against the inequity that would
be caused by the new county trailer park ordinance,
which they have recommended for adoption. The
next battleground will be the county supervisors'
meeting room, where the ordinance will be consid-
ered next Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 28.
As long as troller dwellers continue taking a free
tax ride at the expense of local homeowners and
businesses, there should be no easing of restrictions
on tra1ler parks. Let's hope that the superyisors also
believe in the principle of everyone paying his fqjr
share for services rendered. If they do, they will table
this proposed ordinance.

• WHO CAN THROW THE FIRST STONE?
St. James Episcopal Church has felt the impact
of racial prejudice here in the Harbor Area. The
church reports that its Parish-sponsored Dutch Indo-
.neslan farmly met w1th a sorry recepion at a temp-
orary winter rental on Turquoise Ave., Balboa Island.
The house-owner received angry phone calls, local
children were not allowed to play with the Indo-
nesian children, and finally the church moved the
new family to another dwelling in Newport. To echo
the comments of the Rev. John Parke: "It is a sobering
thought to realize how much racial prejudice exists
right here in our own community."

RAILROAD FEATHERBEDDING:
TO THE NATION-INCLUDING YOU-EVERY YEAR
Featherbedding on the railroads -pay for work
not done or not needed -is costing the Amer-
ican people the shocking total of more than
$500,000,000 a year.
You pay for it every time you shop, because
featherbedding costs .are hidden in the price ol
everything you buy.
Obsolete union work rules. involving the rail-
road operating employees, are responsible for this
gigantic burden. Right now, for instance, these
rules require every diesel locomotive to carry a
fireman -even though diesels have no fires to
stoke, no boilers to tend
The forthcoming negotiations between the rail-
roads and the unions are urgently important to
the whole natioo.
In asking the unions to drop these featherbedding
rules, all the railroeds ask for is a fair day's
wodt for a fair clay's pay.

Publisher of thf' E:ns1gn :
In reference to your editorial
of <Xt. 8, I heartily a~rree with
your criticism of public apathy
and the arbitrariness of our city
offldals: but when you conc-lude
Mrs. Mary Burton Is leading us
down tht> road to socialism, I
don't follow you
It takes a s tout heart and a
thick skin to get a unanimous
vote from the City Council, and
It also takes a crusader's determ·
1natlon. Mrs. Burton believed in
her cause, and she has a long
history of dedicated civic Interest
and accomplishments.
It Is my personal opinion that
neUMr the former concession·
alree nor those In favor of 2 or
more future concessions at the
CDM beach received a fa ir hear·
i ng before thi Council. But then
the Council chamber Is not a
courtroom. You were a witness to
the most unjudicial treatment
accorded the concessionaires' at·
torney, Charlet! Schlegel, as you
noted In an earlier editorial. The
CourK'll was obviously more
amenable to the counsel of Mrs.
Burton.
As to the future plans for the
main bearh, may I suggest a
third solution? That the City of
Newport B P a c h build Its own
con~ion buildings and lease
directly to the food and gear ~n·
resslonalres. This would ellmtn·
