• COMMENTING ON THE NEWS OF THE WEEK
IAI.IOA ISLAND -The problems f6cing the Is-
land residents are severe, but I am in agreement
with statements made · by Councilman Dee. Cook:
that there is no need for new laws, just strict enforce-
ment of laws already on the books. Easter Week
proved this to be true .... TEACHEIIS• $ALARJES-
Because the biggest chunk of our local taxes goes
for schools, and because salaries are the biggest
chunk of school costs. and because the salaries are
high, I agree with the Newport Beach school board's
decision to reject the teachers' committee request for
yet another $100 increase in the beginning minimum.
I agree with trustee Milo Lacy's observation that
"$4,800 to start with is a darn g ood wage," also that
there should be individual rewards for tea~rs who
are doing an outstanding job. The $4 .800, by the
way, is really fo r 8 months of w ork, w hen all the
vacation days are subtraeted; this makes the begin-
ning salary about $600 a month .... SCHOOL COSTS
-I am not happy to hear the remark from our High
School board president that there is no way to cut
down on that $4 ,250.000 in high school bonds, de-
feated in the April election. This remark is similar to
President Ike's repeated assertions that his enormous
foreign aid spending mustn't be cut a nickel. ...
CHESSMAN -I have previously expressed my
doubts about capital punishment. a sentiment that
goes back to my reporter days in Columbus, where
I watched the electrocution of a death row inmate
Capital punishment is vengeful. rather than crime
deterring. But this belief did not create any soft spot
in my heart for Caryl Chessman There we re no
justified grounds fo r seeking to make a hero or a
martyr of that despicable criminal. or for seekmg
clemency for him. There was no reason that he
should escape execution. while others paid w ith thetr
lives for their crimes. It is proper to campaign fop
doing away with capital punishment. but let's not
glorify Chessman.
