I might have added a P.S. that "all of the above
is true ." In any case, you can see, from the Edison
ad on page 4, that the plea was heeded. Th~nk you,
Young & Rubicam ... Indeed, this has been a
good week for the Ensign, as you can also see from
a story on page one -that the City Councll has
designated the Ensign as the Official Newspaper
for the City of Newport Beach for the hscal year that
begins tomorrow. Thank you, City Councll ... And
there is yet another b it of good tidings--a growng
interest during the past months m the Ensign, dem-
onstrated in the very b est possible way, by many,
many new subscriptions. Thank you, dear sub-
scribers -new and old ... Pardon me for boasting,
b ut it's going to be a great year for the Ensign!!

Well, it's that time again. All across the Nation they're doing
it. Cooking ou tdoors, J mean.
Whoever invented the first stove tor cooking Indoors must
have worn his coftln thin turning over In it! And doubUea.s many
a modern man or woman will go to his earlier tor having deviated
from cooking by gas or electricity. Cooking outdoors is really simple. First you buy a barbecue.
This entails some shopping for the best buy, a careful conslder-
a Uon of the virtues of spit cookery, of round vs. rectangular cook·
lng su rfaces, and learning that a hood lsn't necessarily a j uvenile
delinquent. , Next comes the matter of where to place the barbecue. It s
well to have It on wheels, since smoke follows beauty, and mother
may have some firm ideas abou t moving the billows of It out of
the \•lcinity of her best rose bush. You have you r choice of several kinds of charcoal. It also is
well to follow directions as to the amount needed for a single
cooking venture. We learned la.rt summer at our house that those
big chunks of charred wood are for pepping the fire up, and not
to be used exclusively. When you do that they can shrink a leg
ot lamb to the size of a chunk of coal In something under a n hour.
Then too, there is always the matter of making wh~tever ~ou
use burn: We've tried the mllk carton method, the take-your-llfe·
in-your-hands method, the get-down-on-your-knees-and-plead
method and the set-It-on-fire-by-your-language meth~. Usually
we've ~orne to the conclusion that It's pretty silly trytng to ~urn
something that ob,·iously has already been burned to the. hmltr
Speaking of a leg of lamb, or any other large-sized p1ece o
meat for barbecUi ng. there is always the proble m of putting It O!'
the spit~ You're supposed to balance the thing so that the spit
turns smoothly. Since a leg of lamb is s mall at ofte. e nd, an~ l~rge

MRS. JACK LEVINE,
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HOUSEWIFE
"Building a Medallion home didn't cost us any more, but it did
offer more in living comforts. Take this all-electric kitchen,
for example. I spend less time cooking because the equipment is
so fast and automatic. And it's so much cleaner, too. My walls;
curtains, ceiling and the range and oven stay spotless with prac-
tically no effort. Even the spatter cups on the range are removable
for easy cleaning. I'd never want to live-in any other kind of a
house except a Medallion home."
