There ahouJd be some balance between the old way and the
new, shouldn't there?
Heaven knows tha t Jo should not want to go back to the old
way. I marvel when I remember how Grandmother brought her
brood through often without a doctor at aU. And I smile remem-
bering how she treated me when, at age 4, I had pne umonia. Not
trusting the treatment that the doctor had prescribed, Grandmother
appeared with a salt sack ClUed thinly with wa nn onions fried In
bacon grease, a poultice for my chest. When she had gone, and
Mamma was out ot the room, I sampled them. Not having eaten
for hours I was h ungry, so I snjtched a gOOd many of them from
the folds of my Dr. Denton pajamas. To be s ure. they made me
mightily Ill, so that 1 upchucked them, and, apparently, cleared
out my little lungs as well.
Thus then! went down in history, unsung, one more Miracle
treatment of old, relegated to that dim hall of memory where
lingers too, the peppermint, wintergreen. goose grease, castor oil
and magnesia we knew.
