citizen rescuers.
The CanadJan victim was last
seen swtmm tne oU Rocky Point
about 1:40 p.m. by hJ s cousin,
Rona ld lfadeau, 16, a nd a friend,
RJchard Westphal, 17, both of
Anaheim. About 15 m inutes later
he was m i 1 1 e d. The friend
climbed to the top of the cUff
at Rocky Point and saw the boy
lying under 5 feet of water. The
boys were joined by an unidenti-
fied akin diver In pulllne the vic-
tim from the water.
Robert Jones, 37, Anaheim, ob·
served the boy betne pulled from
the water, Immediately pulled
the snorkel from the boy'a mouth,
removed the face mask and be·
gan rescue breath ing. A life·
guard, Joel DuPlaln', was busy
removing a small outboard motor
boat t:rom inside the roped-oU
swimmlng area when the drown·
lng occurred, but joined In the
application of artificial respira-
tion. Lt. Bob Ibbotson and Lt.
Don Vaughn arrived with a re·
suscitator, which was used for
about 30 seconds. They then de·
cided to switch to an airway re·
suscltube to g<>t a more complete
exchange of air into the lungs.
A physician arrived and gave
the boy a heart Injection. but
finally pronounced him dead. Lt.
l bbo~on reported ,that the boy
apparently lost consciousness be·
tore drowning. because the face
mask and snorkel tube were still
Intact and there was a complete
lack of blue co1orlng.
The body was taken to the
Baltz Mortuary, Corona del Mar,
to be forwarded to Edmonton.
