There's been a Mamma at our house this past week. She has
her own Individual Fan Club of four. each lookJne to her for a
thousand wants that Qelther Daddy nor Grandma can provide.
Watching a mother like that, hearing the chorus of voices
pleadJng. demandJne, liatenine to the cry in the nJeht, the sooth·
lng words of comfort, you're transported back through time with a
little start of surprise.
Once, you, too, performed these tasks, tirelessly but not un·
tired; stepping llehtly on leaden feet, Uttlng the baby, patching
the skinned knee, tucking the bedclothes, combing snarls.
Watchlnl from the aldelines. you know tha t Nature was wise
when she eave children mostly to the young.
When there are several grandchildren In one family, and you
see them only once a year or so. you are struck by the realizaUon
that they a re all much alike at the same age.
At three months they sleep, eat and sleep; at one year they
walk, fall, and cry lustlly; at aae two they say "NO" vociferously
and with finality; at three they cling to their mother's skirts
wall upon the slightest provocation; at four they are comtne Into
their own as Individuals, a little more sure and aware of the social
amenities and s uch frivolities as ruttled panties a nd bows In their
hlllt.
At six the boy who last year was cllnelng to the privilege
of being first In the limelight has gentled Into a younester with
all the promise of manliness.
It's wonderful to have arandchlldren. to take their small, moist
hands and go walklna on a s ummer's evenine, to have all the
time you never had for their Daddy to point out to them those
extra wonders of the world about them. to share stories of re·
m~rkable jungle creatures who wear trousers.
And In the nlaht. how sweet to come upon them poised atop
the bedclothes exactly as they fell asleep, and tuck them In again.
Then, as the baby tries his lungs upon the cool night air how
not-to-be-underrated is that •peclal prlvileae of tumlna him over
to his yawnlna mother, knowing no-one else will do for him and
that your own iood bed awaits you.
A·ah, YES. To each her own, a nd at each age like the unfold·
Ina of the rose. to each her special place in life, and In the Uvea
of her children.

How long has It been since you
used your waffle Iron? Well, un -
less you are on that stuff you
drink twice a day to lose weight
get out the shiny thing, dust It
off and prepare for a little easy
family or company cooking.
Tricks with wartles are many.
A favorite for breakfast. lunch
or supper calls simply. for your
own best recipe or one off a box
ot mix. When you've poured the
batter on the Iron add a thin
s lice of boiled ham to each waf.
fie, close and bake. The ham
will be m ostly on the Inside
when crisp.
Try variations on your waffle
Irons. It you never have made
corn bread that way, do try it.
It's quick and crisp. Four com
bread wattles piled up shortcake
fashion with creamed ham or
chlcl<en between layers can be
cut ple·fashlon and served to a
hungry crowd.
Chocolate cake batter can be
"wattled" and served with Ice.
cream. Make the batter a lillie 1
thicker than ordinarily, howe\=t"r.
Another use tor the waffle iron
Is In the making of French toast.
Better grease It a bit tor this
one. Many like to serve ginger·
