Here are portions of a letter he sent to C1ty
:Council:
"I protest most vehemently the spendin~ of
any money to hire consultants to determme
whether tall buildings should or should not be
permitted in Newport Beach. It seems to me
that when a vocal and selfish minority oppose
anything in California, constituted au~oriti~s
are prone to hire someone to make theu deci-
sion.
"I think we are fortunate in having a very
fine Planning Commission and staff, one of the
best Engineering departments. and a most com-
petent City Council ... It is not nece~ to em-
ploy letter-head engineers to determme some-
thing that we are capable of ascertaini~~ for
ourselves. I might add. too. at no additional
cost."
Last week's Ensign reported that estimates on
the cost of hiring experts to make the tall buildina
survey are as high as $4 0.000. Most of that $40.000
probably would go toward acquainting the outside
experts with local facts that are common knowledge
t0 us who live here. I'll take my chances with our own local officials.
who are familiar with our Harbor Area and its many
problems and its great potenti~. That would place
the responsib ility right where 1t belongs-on our
own officials, who have to continue livinq here with
their decisions. And then no one could say, after
the d eed is done, "Well. we only did what those
experts from the big city recommended." • • *

One of m free lance writing jobs takes me each Tuesday to
the Long Bea~h City Hall, there to attend the d~y-long meetlna

Lut week I noticed a quiet lltlle woman, a ray of hair, ll.aten·

She remained all momlna. left tor lunch, and was back again
fCir the afternoon J~eSSion. At 4 p.m. we went down In the elevator
together.
"What do you do at the meetings?" she asked In a strong
Cnnadlan accent. ·
I told her I wu a newspaper woman.
".My," she said, "bn't It wonderful to be able to a ttend and
witness first hanct how our city is being run? 1 just think those
coundlmen are wond~rful they way they try to work thtnas out."
AI. we reached the aidewalk she continued: "I'm from Canada,"
she safd, "and I've only been naturalized slx months. I decided
to learn all I could abO ut my new country. But l wish l could get
sc.meone to come with me. You know. 1 live In an apartment
hotel with a great many women my aae who have enough income
so they don't have to worry. Some are independt>nt and some on
pension. But l can't get a slnale one to come to the City CounciJ
with me."
"l guess they'd rather stay home." I said.
She laughed shortly. "Stay home!" she said. "That's what you
think. Why, they're up bright and early, standing In line down
at the court to hear the trials. They lm·lted me to go and 1 did.
