The pa rk standards committee
of the Newport Beac h Parks,
Beaches a nd Recreation Commls-
slon has drafted a 7 -point recom-
mendation for city beautification
for consideration by t he Commls·

Members of the park standards
committee are Mrs. Emory Moore.
Mrs. Isabel 'Pease a nd Mrs. Philip
Burton from the Park Commls·
slon, Edward Starnes from the
city recreation department and
Ca l Stewart. park superintendent.
Their recommendations are:
A. We do not wish to presume
on the developer's prerogative as
to the best economic deve lop-
ment of his land. but we would
Jlke to suggest that the servic-es ot a landsca~ architect should
be u ti lized simultaneously with
the servl~s of the engtneers.
rathe r than after cutting and
gTading are final.
B. We s uggest strips of la nd
dividing housing projectll (or
sub·d lvlslons) could be utilized
for tall·tree planting and serve
as beautification or gret>n belts.
giving vertical accents In the
land development.
C. We approve the prt>5erva ·
tlon of wilderness areas. where
l>OS$ible.
0 . Ravines a nd barancas could
well be preserved to provide
space and natural areas of beau-
tification.
E. We recommend for your con·
slderatlon that contouring and
grading mltrht better follow nat·
ural llne.s, at least In part. r~(heT
tha n over·a ll artificial "pad" a nd
"shelf'' development.
F. We would suggest that
where posJ~lble some streetJI run
towards the ocean and Upper
Bay to provide a view of the wa -
ter through the frame of tall,
s lender trees. <Good examples
of tree pla ntings and views are
found in Three Arch Bay. Ranrho
Santa Fe and Palos Verdes.l We
also s uggest "windows" on the
Upper Bay (small vle<v pa rk.!
which would benefit a ll resl·

G. While we regrt't the ex-
pressed intt'nt to re movt> all ex-
Isting landma rk blue.gum trees.
we can appreciate the pra ctlcaJ
reasons tot this decision. How·
ever. In view of this Intention.
we earnestly urge the Immediate
planting of new sky·llne trees
a nd the planting of the Kteen

for this purp'lSe t he following ·

The backs were hitting so fast

Gamea such as this Is why

Don't make the mJstake of sell·
