e WHO HAS 1liE RIGHT TO MAKE DECISIONS?
The Irvine C o . seems to be a favonte wh1pping
b o y these days. There's been a lot of talk about "lack
of progress" and about "ignoring ob lig ations to the

nonsense mentioned abo ve -that "human rights
are superior to property rights." -
The new Irvine Co. president. former Navy Sec-

My feurtla cldld'a rocked to aiMp.
'Rhyme and Reason Ia 18 years old this monrh. I know because
• my youngest child was 7 month.! old when I atarted It. In a tile
turning yellow now with years, the above poem on the then
momentous question : to rock. or not to rock, makes me smJle a
little.
I At the same time there ls a feeJing ot Impatience with that
good gentleman, Dr. Spock, and aU the ,psychologists and pedla·
trlclans who have harassed young mothers with their theories
through the years .
Not that th£'y don't have a place. but how they have changed
their Ideas through the years. In the early '30s and '40s babies
were ret cry until they were purple. ret on exact a-hedules at
4-hour Intervals, and started cautiously on cereal as a first solid
food when they were 6 month.! old.
Today they have a menu as varied a.s any adult by the time
they are 5 months old. Thousands and thousands of little tin
cans find their way to gTocery carts and cupboard shelve•.
We have gone from s1ern dlsdpllne and a "no rock" principle
to something called permissiveness. Some bright ~hologlst a p·
pare"lly discovered that cuddling, as natural to mothers and babies
