e EVALUATING SCHOOL TEXTBOOK'S
My commendation to s chool board member Mel
Berry for voting agains t the use of the reference
book, "Geography and World Affairs," in our ele-
mentary school district. There should be no place in
our educational system for a textbook that whittles
away at our respect for our na tion's heritage, min-
-imizes the bruta lity of Soviet aggression, promotes
one-world government, downg ra d es the United
States in its relations with its neig hboring countries,
praises e conomic planning by governmen t, and, in
general, takes a n egative view. of our nation. • .,. *
e "HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE RIGHT? ..
A postcard se nt to the publisher of the Ensign
last week from Costa Mesa carried just these inquir-
ing words: "How can you be so S URE that YOU are
RlGHT?"
Now, I've heard this q uestion b efore, and I know
the line of reasoning tha t follo ws, namely, that what
is right de pends upon who's d oing the talking. An-
other way to say it is that "right" a nd "tru th" are
changeable -depending fo r their meaning o n what-
eve r the majority may a ccept a t any given moment
in history. In other wo rds. there are no eternal truths
that remain unchanging for a ll time .
I disagree w ith this philosophy of "majority
makes right." I believe tha t there are eternal truths.
the "moral absolutes." that they are to be found in
the laws of God. and that it is the duty of every per-
son on earth to seek out these truths and to live by
them. To be "right" means abiding by those truths.
Despite the d oubts of the skeptics. the re is no
mystery about the laws of God. They are writte n in
the Bible fo r all to read. Whatever claim I ma y have
to being "right," I credit to my daily effo rt to live by
those laws.
The skeptics who say that there are no e ternal,
unchangeable truths are in reality saying tha t there
is no God. That is an awesome judgment to make.
