It is "Ame rica. Land of Freedom," by Gertrude Hartman. published by D. C . Heath and Co., and used in eighth grade history classes at H o race Ensign School. This evaluation has b een made by a local resi- dent who is a staunch conservative and has had considerable experience w ith school affairs and with te«tbooks. She brings out an important point tbat often is m issed by school trustees and administrators in judging the fairness and accuracy of a textbook - namely , that omission can be an important factor in distorting history. She points out a number of sig- nificant omissions of fact in this book. which is rated by her as un-American. Here is the review : By MRS. PATRICIA HENRY A lan Nevin. libe ral historian, in hts foreword of this textbook, says, "thts nation 1s dedicated to the welfare of the common man." One wonders why he does not tell the student this nation became great because of the uncommon man · In this textbook there is much stress 0 !1 "classes of sOClety." The author overlooks the !act that Amer- l(;a 1s the only country in the w orld where people are fr e e to move upward from one so-called class to an- o 'her if they have the initiative and ambition to do so e U'JOBT: I wish to report a victory-and a defeat. EverythJng haa chanced now. Especially the dolls. Now they have vinyl akin, and aeran hair, eyes that roll, blink and sleep, a talking machine voice box, and clothes to give Mother ideas about how much her own wardrobe needs replenlshinc. Newest of the new is a baby doll so real, ao Ooppy of head and -s>rlggy ol hair, so damp of dla~rs and bottomJeu.plt of tummy that It's Jlttle wonder that little girls of Today shall be murh too exhausted by thls pseudo motherhood to reUsh starting all over again wtth the real thine! Christmas trees already are appearing In windows, and this. too, may make the sentimentalist with a nostalelc vein a little sad, remembering fragrant fir of Yesteryea r, set up on Christm as Eve and taken down on New Year's Day u surely as Monday was wash day! In years past I have had my uy about Christmas trees of blue and pink, to say nothing of those sprayed In neon colors of the rainbow. Now It's the metal tree that overwhelms, caudy nod to a synthetic age. It lt be true that there Is little use In looking back. then let us keep our Christmas with any compromise which modern cu.t· tom dictates In these superficial, surface evldPnCE"S of the season. At the same tJme, Jet us hold on to those dPeper meanings which memory holds dear, bulldlnz tor our own children the tradl· tlon~ of family c-ustom. awarenes.f ol the Christ In Christmas, and tht> warm, sweet experienCE's of sharing with others.
