another approach to brinf the
problem to the attention of all
aduJts. Dr. Katherine Baln,
Marion L. Fae&'le and 'Robert S.
Wyley conducted a n experiment
Involving ~1 pre.schoolers who
were trapped purpoeely In a aim·
wlated experimental refrll'rator
box.
Three reaction pattern• fol·
lowed: -One In four of the
youngsters sat patiently for 15
minutes, making Jlttle or no
attempt to escape. Thlrty·nlne
percent were calm but lmmedl·
ately tried to get out by puahlne
on the walls or manipulating the
Ia tch; the ,majority succeeded.
The remainder became panicky
or angry and kicked, pounded,
or jumped; only one In three
from this group was able to
escape.
Care was taken to pre\'ent the
youngsters from being harmed
In any way, and elaborate de·
\•Ices were used to study their
reactions accuratt>ly. Interviews
with the parents later showed
that this shut·ln experience did
no harm. The ~xperlment dem-
onstrates that the child who
keeps his head and Immediately
tries to get out stands the best
chance ot Jiving to tell the tale.
Legislation now requires that
all refrigerators must open easily
from the Inside. The present re.
lease equipment Is not fooJ.proof
but will allow the majority of
trapped children to escape If they
know how to manage the sltua .
tlon."
Ma kes you stop and think,
doesn't It?
