H e re is an o b servation which has a lot of m erit-
{! o m one of the recent news letters of s tate Senator
Jc hn M u rdy: "I a m w ell aware of the useful purposes
of adult education courses. I think school officials
are doing a good job . But I also think the taxpayers'
responsib ility to provide h is fe llow man w ith an edu-
ca tion stops w ith the college diploma. Any of these
frill c o u rses tak en at leisure should not b e supported
with tax m o n e y ... T hose that want these frill courses
should pay for them."
A nd here is an o bservation with which I
t horoughly disagree-from one of the news letters
of s tate A ssemb lyman Bruce Sumner. commenting
on the pro p osed 23r d amendment for repeal of the
income tax amendment: ·'I do not see how w e can
provide for the defense of our nation and at the same
time take from it 80 per cent of its revenue. The
Bureau of the Budget figures show th at in 1961. 55
cents of every in com e dollar to the federal govern-
ment w lll come from perso nal in come taxes and 25
cents from corporation mcome taxes. Balanced
against this, w e have what I consider to b e an
absolutely necessary e xpendttu re o f 57 cents of ev-
ery tax dollar for national defense." ·
Mr. Sumner o v e rlook s . firstly, the fact that th e
proposed 23rd amendment w ould get the federa l
g overnm e nt out of the hundreds of b usinesses in
wh1ch it is unco nstitutionally engaged, and in which
1t loses a b out the sam e amount of m oney each year
as the personal m c ome tax es b ring in .
Secondly., he assumes that there is no room for
reduct1o n in the e normous defense s pending. o r in
the tax m oneys poured J!1to the sociolistic, w elfare-
s tate programs of the federal governm ent.
Thirdly , end most important of all. perhaps Mr
S umner does n ot real!ze hat there is o n ly one way
to cut dow n the rumous spendmg and to save our
na:1on fro m bankru ptc y , and that is "to cut them off
at the pocke ts' -take a way that easy s ource of
revenue, the M a rx1an income tax method.
· I am of the o p m1on that our Ame n can Republic
cann ot survtve d the mcom e tax ameodment is not
re p e ale d -there is no other way to halt our r a p id
march along' the road to full scale socialism.
