· My assumption always has been that the ~ega-
tive alwa y s imphes the positive. For example, thou
shalt not steal" certainly implies that "thou shalt
respect the property of th y neighbor." It also has
the v irtue of b revity, usmg only 4 words to do the
work of 8.
If I may borrow ~orne words from the John Bi:ch
Society, I can give another exampie. Our warmng
agamst big government is always a ccompamed by
the plea for more ind1vidual responsibility , because
it 1s the shirk ing of personal responsib !ltty that
bu1lds b tg government and eventual tyranny f>n
several occasions. the Log has made a positive rec-
ommendation lor cutting b tg government down to
constitutional s1ze. by repeal of the 16th (mcome tax)
amendment (A nd m thts connection. be sure to
read the report on W tllts Stone's speech-on Page l
of thts issue of the Ensign, I almost said "don't fail
to read the report" . but then I remembered Hol-
lie's plea for positive think ing.)
Rolhe's comment ab out textbooks is well taken.
and I hasten to cWd that the parents w ho star ted the
textbook mqulry are. indeed, looki ng for satisfactory
substllute texts. Hts remarks about our cit1zens not
being elfechve members of this democracy (the w ord
1s republic. not dem ocracy, Rollie) suggests to me
the thought that our schools are not doing .as effec-
tive a job a s they m ight be doing.
Finally, the Log does have ~consistent positive
word : ''Seek y e first the kmgdom of G od. and h1s
righteousness." for faith m God is the hr st require-
men lor all endeavors.

Robert W elch of the John Birch Soc1ety . who says
