. • niE BAY CLUB'S IN THE NEWS AGAIN
The Balboa Bay Club , which has been the ce~ter
of cohtroversy at times during it~ 1~ years of extstf
ence, is in the news again -thts tlme becal:ls.e o
the disclosure by Councilman Dee Cook that 1~ has
been operating all these years without a busmess
hcense. Indeed. about 5 hcenses a p pear to be re-
quired, and 2 of them need Cou~cil approval. There
should be no question that the hcenses shol:lld be o~
tamed -in all fairness to all the ?ther bu~messes. m
the city that pay license fees. and m comphance wtlh
the city's ordinances.
* * * e "HOW TO WIN FRIENDS···· " . There's a measu re of comfo rt m a gem of wts-
clom that I have tacked on the wall in my office: a
quotation from Samuel Hopkins Adams-::A ne ws-
paperman wi~hout enemies has no fnends.
* * * e TURNING BACK THE PAGES OF ~TORY
The Eichma nn trial by the Israeh government
turns back the pages of time to an entry in ~y wq -
time diary of more than 15 years ago. Thts en~
is dated Jan. 26, 1946. and tells of an occasion when
newsreels of horrible concentration camp scenes
were shown to German ptizens of Berchtesgaden in
Southern Germany. ·
26 Jan 46, •Saturday-A documentary film, "Die lodes-
Muehlen," Hie "DeaHl Mills," is being Jlown t+lis evening at Hie
Kur Kinb, the movie house in nearby S.d Reichenhall. Several
of us from Hie Military Government detachment at Berchtesg~
den we .. t to see it. Fi"t there were newsreels on a gold ruJI •n
"· Canada, electrification of farm communities, penicillin provided
for Germany, digging up an unexploded bomb in Croyden,
England. Th~ Hie 25-minute KZ film, wit+! commentary in
German. (KZ is the German abbreviation for Konzentrazions-
lager, "concentration camp.")
It is the mod horrible, damning film I have seen. Horror
heaped on horror as scene after scene of inhumanity was shown
Fleeting Jlots of KZ camps:. Belsen, Dachau, Maut+lausen, Nord-
heusen, Maidyne~. where victims were "verhungert, e"choss~n,
verbrennt" -starved, Jlot, burned. Rows on rows of bod•es
which were not human, although here and t+lere a pitiful corpse
moved, more terrible then the dead. _Bodies which were only
s~in stretch.d tightfy oYer bones. Some stumbling along on
their own power. Some crawling -one who tried end failed
br~e into weepin9, droppin9 his head on his arms. Many
lyin9 wit+! eccusin9 eyes, unmovinCJ. Worst of all-Hie dead
with open eyes, screaming mouth. Bodies pilecj li~e cordwood.
The masses of shoes. Most heart-rencfi"9 -tfle little shoes.
Buncfles of women's heir. Gold from teet+!, rings, wetdtes,
trin~ets, clot+les ta~en from the victims. Piles of ashes, bumed
bones. Little children wit+! branded arms. Scenes of the
Germans-goin9 laughin«jjy to see a K2 camp on order of
Maitery Government, gotnCJ through the chamben of horrors.
finely brea.ing down, weepincJ. coverin9 t+leir eyes, coming out
cowed, heads down, no longer looking gaily at Hie camera. The
KCulin9 voice of th. German commentator: "Was haben sie
d•CJ89en get en 7" .•. "What d id you do to oppose tflis 1"
The borror is as real today as 1! was then. b ut
toda y there is a bette r understanding of the evil. In
the World War II era there was unanimous con-
demna tion of the Nazis, but a strange blindness to
the equallly brutal exce sses of the Russian commun-
ists-perhaps because they were then our allies.
Let us hope that the Eichmann case does not blind
us anew, because the basic evil is tota litarian power
-Nazism. Commu nism, Facism-and we have to re-
S ISt this in all its phases.
