~ e PLAYING WITH FIRE
At times there arise issues of such peril to free-
dom that they must be met head on, and defeated,
right on the spot, if freedom is to prevail.
Our city officials here in Newport Beach are now
making an initial step toward such an issue-urban
renewal-and they are edging toward the disaster
by their own invitation-much like children fasci-
nated by firp and seeking to explore the danger
further.
"Uroan renewal" is a pleasing, sugar-coated
phrase. an appealing lure. But there's a hook instde.
Stripped of its disguise, it 1s a repudia tion of the
nght to own and manage property-the bas1c ele-
ment of indtvtdual freedom. f or those who do not
b elieve m the sanctity of property r ights, urban re-
r.e·Ndl may appear to be desirable. But the peril
con be clearly seen by those who recognize the nght
to own property as a God-gtven right. sancti~ned by
the C ommandments which state that "Thou shall not
s:eol .. a nd "Thou shall not covet."

jeep ride we won't soon forget.
Don't ask me where we went. All
11 know Is that it was in the Pi nto
Mountains. somewhere near the
ghost town of Dale. John had
never bee n there himself. Some
friend In 29 Palms had told him
that ori top of one of the highest
t>eaks In the Pintos. there were
a lot of old silver mines. He said
lh(' mine dumps were alive with
<'Oior. That was too much for the
explorer spirit in John. We were
lucky that we could go with him.
There were mines all over that
mountain--all or them ruins of
what once had been. We atopped
at quite a few of them. One had
the remains or an old dance hall
still recognizable. After the goat
path we jeeped over to get there.
I'd guess that any ladles who
came either rode horses or
walked.
All around these old ghost
towns were broken bottles, and
other sorts of glass. The desert
s un. and time. had changed the
glass to a beautiful amethyst
purple. Modern glass doesn't ~
come th1s color. The sun changes
It to an uninteresting green or brown.

* * * "You often write about children and marriage," said a reade.r
last week. "Why don't you write about romance? Is It because It
laat.s ,for such a little while?"
Mercy! Whoever 3ald so? Romance C'an last as long as a
woman will keep It allv~. and If she's had a single, perfect day to
remember that's richness for all the years to come.
The poet said. "Better to have loved and lost than never to
h ave loved at all." And right he Is! Oh. you may not think so
at the lime of the losing, but It's true, lor all that.
Jt's easy, when you're young. to look at the maiden Aunt and
wonder whether she's ever been kls_wd, and If she wa.s why she
let the fellow 4tet away from her. And It's easy, too. when you
look at the couple down the street, to say to yoursciC, "Wha t ever
do th~y see In each other?"
Someone has said, "Lov~ Is blind," a nd If It Is what a dear,
sweet thing blindness can be!
Some people · go a long wearing the r()S('·COiorod gla~es be.
stowed by love all of thf'i r lives, and quite hiPssed a re they. But
those who put aside s uch eye p ieces for the bi -focals of stern
reality and still continue to lovr. without any taint of martyrdom.
oh, they know the meaning of the word!
Too ofte n a woman Is apt to confuse roma nce with Jove.
This is to be expected. since romanc«>, to her, is almost the breath
of life. Mjlny a woman would rather have a man speak sw('('t
nothings than mow the front lawn. and lf she complains because
he doesn't do the latiN It may we ll be due to the ract tha he has
not. for months. done the former!
Women a re at bf>st difficult creatures. Sometlmt>s you wonder
why men put u p with them at all. As tor m<'n. how does any
woman e ndure them? It must be something sw<'Ct that echoes
down the halls of memory, some thread of roman<'f'. some magic
day almost forgottt>n, that tlrs now and then to nudge tht'm
Into mf'mories shared.

A "reck t.dwy" in which
man. not Mother Na·
ture runs things, has
recently gone into op--
eration. It belonga to
Western Electric, the
manufacturing branch
of the Bell System, and
the rocks produced are
quartz crystals.
Thin slices of quart&
crystal are used in aev·
eral types of telephone
equi pme nt. Whilfl
there's Jots of natural
quartz in the world, big
cr ystals that can be
sliced , are scarce and
expensive.
To get around this,
Western Electric is
using a unique proceM to "grow" large crystals from
smal,, inexpensive pieces of quartz. The man-made
crystals (above) cost a Jot less than large. natural ones.
And because they are more evenly shaped, twice as many
usable slices can be cut from them.
