The captions below the pictures were the same as are now being presented here. There was no editorial comment. But the pictures themaelv• were eloquent editorials. and the response from En- sign readers was instantaneous and almost unani- mous in agreement. They were appalled. and angered, at the "beat-nik" representation which desecrates our Lord and takes away His glory and divinity. These pictures symbGlize the controversy that is now going on in our Corona del Mar Church, be- =ause the "beat-nik" Jesus is in the Sunday School material prepared by the United Church of Christ. and a determined effort is being made by a group in our church_ to withdraw from the merger ;with the United Church. The basic reason for our desire to withdraw is the wish to restore the status of our church as an mdependent Congregational Church. in spiritual harmony with the faithful group of local citizens who established this House of God. But the new curriculum also is an important factor, because it represents what we think will be the trend under the merger-an increasing concern for worldly matters. an emphasis on the social gospel. and a diminishing faith in the Christian message of salvation and hope for life eternal in the Kingdom of God. The church members who have joined together to form the Committee for Continuing Congregation- al have been criticized from the pulpit as disrupting spiritual unity, stating half-truths. seeking to split the church. and playing into the hands of the commu- nists. Those are serious charges to come from our pastor. I think they need to be reconsidered with great care and judgment. · Who are they that are seeking to split the church: The membe rs who are faithful to the original purpose of the founding of our Congregational Church? Or the small minority that promoted the merger with a new denomination? Who are they that are disrupting spiritual unity: The members who are seeking to preserve the holi- ness in the p ictorial rendition of our Saviour? Or the minority that brought in the degrading caricat- ures ske tched in the new curriculum? And. since the issue has been raised from the pulpit, who are they that can be a ccused of playing into the hands of the communists: The members who are s,teadfast in their faith in the divini'ty of our Saviour and wish Him to be depicted in his glory - "the glory as of the only begotten of the Father. full of grace and truth"? Or they that can permit Him to be depicted as a grotesque human, stripped of spmtuality and d ivinity? This is not just an isolated little family quarrel withm the congregation of a single community church. It Is a symbol of what is occurring in chu rches all over the nation. You ma y call it the conflict between social gospel and the gospel of the Word of God. It is also the struggle between those who dispute the miracles recorded in the Bible, the virgin birth of our Saviour, and the Good News of Salvation, and those who hold to the Bible as the inspired Word and the hope of a ll mankind. Let us pray that the faith in the word of God will prevail. • PAftiOTISII Publisher or the Ensign. --- finer place to live and raise my children.
