e MUST BE WRONG TO BE ··.ANTr' . .
It is mighty enlightening to listen to a d.iscuss1on
of-anti-communism, such as took place Tuesday eve-
ning at the meeting of the school board of the New-
port Beach Elementary School District. It may be
that not many minds are changed, but an observer
can certainly find out who belongs to which side.
That, in itself, is of great value in a time of history
when neutrals are quite out of place.
1 am slightly amazed at the statements of the
anti-anti-communists. Some of these statements
sound fine, and are acknowledged by considerable
applause. But a closer examination ~o.ws the rea-
soning to be wrong because the premu;e lS false.
Here are some of the remarks made Tuesday
evening:
• Grayce Sevier, former principal of Corona del
Mar School: "Those who are so steamed up about
this don't want you to disagree with them. That's
one of the things we are fighting for-the right to
disagree." That is a noble statement, loudly ap-
plauded, but wholly misleading, ~cause ~e ~b
jective of anti-communism. schools 1s to l?rov1de m-
formation about the menace of communlSm, not to
stifle contrary opinions. Indeed, it might be pointed
out that Mrs. Sevier herself is showing considerable
displeasure at those who disagre~ with ~er. . .

"Creating an atmosphere of suspicion and name
calling will hinder progress, and our children or~
the chief victims." This is stock-in-trade of the anh-
anti-communist attack. The truth is that suspicion
and name-calling are not features of anti-com~u
nism schools-except to the degree that the tactlcs
of known communists are looked upon w ith extreme
s uspicion-communists such as Khrushchev, Mao
Tse-Tung, Castro and Tito.

loudest a pplause of the evening. To me the implica-
tion is quite clear: tha t the re should be NO encour-
agement of patriotism. I believe that patriotism de -
serves all possib le encouragement, a nd should
never be ta ken for granted, beca use the p reserva-
tion of our nation will depend on it.
• Ed Rice, teacher: "We only a sk the freedom to
a pproach the study of communism in our own way."
There•ts the imphcation of force , the sugges tton that
tea chers are being coerced to a ttend antt-commu-

Again I wonder: Why is 11 so unpop~lar to be
ant1-communist? Why should not the anh-commu-
