· e .. UNIFY-OR ELSE •• :·
School unifica tion -"to provide better educa-
tion facilities"-sounds a ltoge ther desirable and log-
ica l. But it is bound to be a step-however short and
sweet-toward more and more consolidation, a nd
therefore surre nd e r of local control.
-The tone of the leg islative mandate appears to
be "unify, or else . . . ... There still is the pretense of
local decision, b ecause we are allowed to vote ''yes··
or "no" on whate ver unification plan is drafted by the
coun ty committee. But dt:> you suppose tha t the
career people in p ublic education who are pushing
for this consolidation will a ccept a "no" vo te ?
They're bound to be back with another n udge , a nd
fin ally the club that will force us to give up some of
our local rights-. b it by bit. .
The state-wide solution is to repeal the unifica-
tion maste r plan legislation, a nd thus turn back the
scheme fo r concentra tion of authority . Locally,
let's keep our school d istricts cmd school boards the
way they are now.
