On this day of Thanksgiving, our expressions of

* *·* e IS IT SUBVERSIVE TO BE PATRIOnC?
A new line of anti-anti-communism has been
developing in our land, and it received endorse-
ment right from the top last week in speeches by
President John Kennedy.
Here, in brief, is the line~-is ~rv.ing as an
effective dlly for the·-De~bef-Mosco:w ~cm~cr
calling for a frontal attack on the growing anti-com-
munist movement in the U,.nited States; "The right
wing conservatives are causing disunity and sus-
p icion and are thus helping the communists by
d1viding our na~on." .
The logic back of th1s anti-anti line is so obvi-
ously false and absurd that no comment should be
necessary. But there are some who are taken in
by it-for example. our ladies of the Harbor Area
Democratic Woman's Club, whose meeting notice
last week warned of John Birch Society activity "sev-
ering our nation at a time when unity means our
salvation.''
Consider the folly of such reasoning: If it is
unpatriotic (some say subversive) to oppose and
criticize, then no corruption in government,. as in
the days of old Tammany Hall, should be exposed;
there should have been no investigation of the Tea-
pot Dome scandals; no outcry against the perfidy
of the Yalta and Potsdam secret give-aways of other
people's freedom; no protest against providing com-
mumst Yugoslavia with jet planes or against training
communist Yugoslav pilots to fly those jets; no pro-
tests against helping to finance the communist
Castro regime in Cuba through the United Nations;
not a word against the State Department intrigue
that engineered the loss of mainland China to com-
mumsm; no attempt to preserve our constitutional
Republic against the forces that are now transform-
ing our country into a socialist state.
Th1s anti-anti-communist line seeks to smear the
patriots who are fighting to save their country as a
free and sovereign nation.
Among the "subversive critics" of history could
be listed the Puritans and Pilgrims, who broke away
fro m the Church of England and came here to
estabhsh the foundation of our great nation; the
colomsts themselves. who rebelled against the
tyranny of the king of England and caused such
· disumty and susp1cion'' as-to sever the ties entirely
and to establish these free United States of Amenca;
and the members of the Democratic Party, including
the Democratic Women, as an opposition party dur-
ing a Republican regime, engaging in constant and
lively attack, often bitter and vituperative, agamst
the party in power.
It is well to compare the records of the right
wing conservatives and the liberals. You will find
these conservatives to be dedicated patriots, de-
termmed. k> do th~r be-Sf-to preserve the wonderful
heritage of freedom handed .. down to them. They
are not the ones who seek to spend our nation into
ruin, or seek to extend the power of government, or
try to destroy such patriots as Gen. Edwin Walker
while promoting such men as Owen Lat1imore.
The liberals are rightfully concerned. We right
wing conservatives a re on to their tactics, and we
a re determined to alert our citizens to the dangers
facing our nation -from within, as well as from
without. We aim to stop the ruinous deficit spend-
ing before it leads our nation into bankruptcy; we
are awakening the people to the peril of appeasing
the communists; we will continue identifying the
New Frontier legislation with its true label -the
road to the welfare state.
Finally, let us ,identify those who really are caus-
ing the division and suspicion in our constitutional
Republic, and let us put the blame where it right-
fully rests: on the liberal New Frontienmen wbo _.
_.king to introduce into our nation the diaaeclited forei9n ldeologiee of state control, gQYemment plan-
ning and centralization of power, which will dellroy
our freeclolll if not halted and turned back.
