FAREWELL TO MR. CORONA DEL MAR
we are all going to miss Bradef'l Finch, who rightfully held
the ti tle of "Mr. Corona del Uar." r cannot thinlc of a single
individual who gave so freely and willingly of his time and
tal ef'lts in the service of his community -except perhaps
beloved Harry Welch.
On l y those who worlced closely with Braden here In Cor-
ona del Mar know fully all the effort he put into community
acti vi ties and the seemingly tire I ess energy he displayed.
He was cheerful through it all. [ cannot remember that he
eve r bo re a grudge, although he could wield a vitriolic pen
on occas1on. Indeed, the Ensign, and myself, and Col. Andy
Smi th were targets of his edi tori al wrath quite some years
back when Braden put out his own \\newspaoer," the Equal-
izer, for several months. But it was sort of tongue in cheek,
and we were all friends when the Equalizer was laid aside,
and Bradef'l wrote many a column for the Ensign later.
Many persons have paid tribute to the memory of Braden
F inch, but an extra special salute comes from a long time
friend, Duncan Stewart, who offers these expressi ve verses
for Mr . Corona del Mar:
ON THE PASSING OF BRADEN FINCH
This fri end has fall en by our s•r:Je
Released by God from raen '"e ~J re,
Into th e deep an d t imeless t1ue
Wh ich f lows upon an other shore .
Wh o no w shall fill the hollow place
His pass1ng 's made' Thts somber bier
Enshrou ds the fo rm endo Ned by Grace
To lov e an d serve his neighbors here.
Wh at fee ble words can eulog1ze

ntEY'RE STlLL PUBLIC SERVANTS
A lesson in good manners -or even JUSt average manners-
could wel l be part of city councilman training. Monday even-
ing's session of the Newport Beach Council is a case in
poin t: Council man Harvey Somers persisted in interrupting
an attorney who was presenting a case against the Balboa
ocean front ball field project, apparentl y a favorite o f Har-
vey's. The harassment finally brought a retort from an in-
trepid l ady from L ondon·town, wh o IS to be commended for
her efforts. Our councilmen are, after all, our public servants,
not yet our masters.

WE'RE HEADING FOR TROUBLE
Th1s i s 1q62, year of elections, and we're in trouble. You
ha ve. read about President Kennedy's call fOf' action on his
hi gh priority legislation and his reminder that it's getti ng
close to el ection time. Translated into realistic Engiish,
that means, "Spend, spend, spend -elect, elect, elect,"
whech many of you will recognize as presidential advisor
Harry Hopk ins' lesson i n politics for F ranklin D. Roosevell
We're in trouble because President Kennedy will exert all
possi ble pressure to gain approval for his ef'IOrmous spend-
ing schemes-urban redeveJopm.~nt, medical care for the aged,
increased unemployment benefits, federal funds for educa·
tion, more farm subsidies, more of our tax money for foreign-
ers. We need more "right wing extremists" (translation: "pat-
riotic Americans seek lng to preserve our const i tutional re-
public").
