S KEEP THE RIGHT TO BE WRONG
C:>uncilman Charles Hart of we st Newport, customarily of
sound, ronservat1 ve thought and act1on, is taking a step on
the wrong side of the road
1\t Monday evening's Ctty Council meeting he asked for a
legal study of the possibility of prohibiting "for 5ale" signs
on restdenttal property. That IS ano~r move m the direction
of con ttol and regulation by government. It's government con-
trol even when our friends and neighbOrs are doing the con-
troltng, and tt can lead only to more and more of the same.
IAr. Hart had reasons, of course. One reason is that "for
sale" s1gns •nvite danger · even murder, as has happened a
few times when a housewife has opened the door to a killer.
~art is Sincerely using th is as an argument, he should
ask for legtslation against many other far more dangerou s
threats to our safety: for eltample, 1nto xi t ating liQuor, wh ich
causes many more deaths, and th e automobile, perhaps the
greatest killer of all time.
The n•urder argument IS indeed fdr fetched. The second
reason he gave is the real reason: "The signs are eye-sores."
Mr. Hart is joinir,g the growing crowd of do good leg1slators
who want to protect us from our ooor tastr:. or from the poor
taste of our neighbors.
As tor me, 1 would far rather su ffer the Inconveniences of
personal freedom of choice, and of thP rtght to make mistakes,
than to suffer the con seQuences CJf letting "9ig Brother"
make al l the decisions for me. The right to make mistakes IS
one of the foundation stones ')f personal freedom, )ince
otherwise there can be no freedom of chotce.

DON 'T TRY TO HELP US SO HARD
A not-so-sudden thought, while listen tng to Ctty C:ounctl
sQuabbling: lAuch of the wort of C1 ty Counctls and most of
the work of Plann ing Commrssions would be wiped out tf all
socialistic ventu res of c1ty government were eliminated. The
author~ty to plan other people's li ve s and property begets
the desire to plan, and plan, and plan some more.

DON'T LET THE HOUSE BURN DOWN
The an ti-anti-communists say that we conservat1ves shout
"communist'' at everyone .vho does not agree with us. The
accusation IS absurd, and false There are certainly many
well-meantng Americans· wh o abhor bottt soc•ali sm and com-
munisrt, but still are advocat1ng soc al and political measures
wh ich are push1ng ou r nat10n left-ward We do not call these
we ll-mean1ng people comrT'un•">ts tut they surely cannot be
immune from critictsm JuSt beca ... )l:' their tntentions are
hono rable.
The antt-ant1's re sent the crtttc•srr: Thetr reasoning must
go sorr:ething lilce thts· If a gcnj-hearted l1beral, ent~rely by
accident and wtth no 1ntent to do har,.,., haopened to set your
house on ftre, you should let your house burn down

LErS KEEP THE RIGHT TO BE WRONG
CJuncilman Charles Hart of West Newport, customarily of
sound, r onservative thought and action, is talcing a step on
the wrong s1 de of the road.
At Monday evening's C1ty Council meeting he asked for a
legal study of the poss1btlity of prohibiting "for ~ale" signs
on res1 denttal prop etty. That IS another move in the direction
of control and regulation by government. It's government con-
trol even when our frt ends and ne1ghbors are doing the con-
troling, and •t can lead onl y to more and more of the same.
Mr. Hart had reasons, of course. One reason is that "for
sal e" s1gn s •nvite danger · even murder, as has happened a
few t•mes when a housewife has opened the door to a killer.
If Mr Hart is sincerely us1ng th1 s as an argument, he should
ask for leg•slation against many o ther far more dangerous
threats to our safety: for example, 1ntoxicating liquor, which
causes many more dea ths, and the automobile, perhaps the
greatest killer of all time.
The n•urder argument i s 1ndeed far fetched. The sec:>nd
reason he gave is the real reason: "The signs are eye-sores."
Mr. Hart is joining the growing crowd of dr:. good legi slators
who want to protect us from our oonr tastr, or frorn the poor
taste of our neighbors.
A.s for me, I would far rather .-.uffer lhe 1nconvefliences of
personal freedom of choice, and of th e nght to make mistakes
ttlan to suffer ttle consequences of letting "Big Brother';
make all ttte decisions for me. The right to make mi Stakes i s
one of the foundation stones o f personal freedom, s1nce
otherw1se there can be no freedom of choice.
