ARE YOU AWARE OF THE DANGER?
In the words of President Theo Robins at Monday's
board meetJng oi the Newport Harbor Chamber of Com-
merce: "Kennedy's strategy In the steel price rise
dispute was one of the most vicious attacks on free
enterpt'l.se that I have seen In m~y years."
Many news commentators and newspaper reporters
appear to be glorifying President Kennedy as "Jack
1he gl~t killer," who has won a tremendous victory
over big Industry on behalf of the common man. There
Is no doubt of the tremendous victory, but i t is not
for the "eommon man," if that is supposed to desl~
nate the average tax-;>aying citizen of our nation.
Heaven help the cause of freedom If the American
citizen and voter does not recognize the deadly dao-
ger In the President's un;>rincipled tactics against
the steel companies. The cheering from the sidelines
for this blow at the "Goliath of Big Stee l" should
tum to cries of p~ic v.heo the full impact hits home:
vttlch industry is next to feel the blow, and where
wilt it stop? If Big Steel does not have the courage
to stand up to a budding dictator, who is going to do
it?
Make no mistake about it. The President is determ-
Ined to carry through with his advantage-to seek
more ttust-bustJng anti-business I egis I ation, to wield
th e whip• of government retaliation against others who
see the need to raise prices to stay alive, and to push
ahead with his own welfare state legislation. lf the
sound comrr.on sen ;e and love of justice and freedom
of the American voter does not halt this savage attack
on business ~d industry, there is not much hope for
preserving our economic system of fre~ enter;>tise. If
freedom of enterprise i s lost, there is no protection
fo r other freedol!'s.
I hear th~ shouts of praise for Kennedy's victory , but
I have hope that in the cold tigh t of dawn, there will
come a more realistic recleaning of the new dangers
now facing us from the White H::>use. Some of the
more preposterous aspects of the case may shock the
Americ~ citizens back to their senses: Consider the
fact that the cry of mon'Jpoly and price fixing is being
raised by the most pJwerful monopolist and pricer
fixer in the nation, the government Itself. consider
also the fact that the accu satiJn of causing inflation
is being raised by the agen cy that is responsible for
about qq per cent of the ruinous inflation that Is plun-
dering our nation-a)ain the real culprit i s the govern-
ment itself with its run-away s;>~nding and unbalanced
tx.ldgets: 'And worse is to come , If the Kennedy tri-
umph swee;>s a number of his socialistic, tax-spend-
inq schenes through Congress.
The stee l firms were cowards to knuckle dov.n to
the mai l ed fist in the ,,..,ite House. 13ut perhaps it is
well that the showdown has come. The administra-
tion's attack on industry and business is nov. in the
open. The fate of our constitutional republic is In the
balance. Wi ll the American citizen finally awaken to
the peri I faci nq us ?
