such reasoning, and they are using a misleading argu-
ment for proposing ~ improper use of state tax moneys
for local purposes.
One· way or another they are wrong: They are wrong
about reQui ring the state tD provide a freeway for local
needs, or they are wrong about reQui ring local communi-
ties to provide the additional cash for additional hei!Jlt
of a freeway btl dge for local needs. They shouldn't talk
out of both sides of their mouth at the same time.
It Is a sickening sight to look at those aerial photos
of freeway s slicing through our community. It Is a pre--
postetous scheme to split our community in two, and to
deal a deadly bl ow to our neighbor to the south-Laguna
9each, which wou ld have its hopes for orderly develop-
ment greviousfy blighted by the freeway bulldozers.
There seems to be a dogged determination on the part
of our State Highway men to keep that freeway on the rim
of the coast, perhaps to carty out their dream to perpetu-
ate their glory in a "sceni c coastal freeway." That
phrase is their own . Sut even that is a hollow claim be-,
cause the freeway, i f thru st through Corona del Mar at
Fifth Ave. or through the Heights near 16th St., wou ld be
a sunlcen freeway, and ltle scenic feature of this mon-
sttosity as i t passes ttlrou~ the greater part of our com-
munity would ve the blue sky above and the side slopes
of the depressed freeway.
Moving the route four miles or so inland from the coast
would provide 'the open f1 elds for a less expensive and
less disru ptive freeway . Would that be too far from the
coast for diverting through-traffic? Sensible Harbor Area
drivers heading for Los Angeles drive to Tustin to get
on the Freeway-more than 10 miles "out of ou r way,"
but a ttemendous saving in time and stress. Throu~-traf...
fie drivers getting on the future coastal freeway on the
south and north of us would certainly stay on the free-
way as it by-passes our area.
Locate an adeQuate coastal freeway out there in the
bean fields, connect it at UacArthur with the carefully
mapped freeway route bypassing our neighbors in Laguna
-and let us local taxpayers solve our own local traffic
problems with improvements on our old standby, Coast
Highway 101.

THEY N:EO A LESSON IN MANNERS
I had a call a .,.,eek or so ago from the campaign office
of Loyd Wright, a late-comer in the qepublican race for
nomination as U.S. senator who has thus virtually guar-
anteed the nomi nation of Me-Too incumbent Tom Kuchel.
The guy on the phone was Mr. Hanson, a long-ttme
newsoaperman, who wanted to know if there was trtJth in
the claim of Howard Jarvis that the '=nsign was one of
the endorsers of Mr. Jarvis' nomination for the Senate
race. I said that I had made no formal endorsement yet,
but that I had written some rather ntce things about 'M.
Jarvis as a <pod, consistent conservative. It v.ould no t
be a wrong assumption to say that I v.ould endorse Mr.
Jarv is' Mr. Hanson wanted to lcno-.... That's a rrighty
logical assumption, I agreed.
I got the impression that Mr. Hanson "as n0t enterely
overJOyed wi th that logical assumptton, because 11 ap-
oeared to me th3t he wa s checking up on Mr. Jarvis to
see i f Mr . Jarvis might have assumed -..rongly and could
be tdken to task for claiming SOIT'ething that ~as not so.
With that issue settled, I had a Question of rr y OMl to
ask of Mr. Hanson. I told htm I had noted Quite a tew
newspapers in these parts carry ing a l engthy di sserta-
tion by Mr. Wright as a political advertisement, and I
asked that the ~nsign too might be included in the list
of ttlose newspapers. Mr. Hanson got off th e phone for a
whi le, consul ted with someone, whom I understood to be
Murray Chotiner, Mr. Wright's campaign manager, dnd
then came bacl( wittl the verdict, "We don't think the
Ensign is worth using as an advertising medium for Mr.
Wright."
Now, ltlat's about as far from nlain pol iten ess and from
sensible political pUblic relations and as close to polit-
ical retal iation as any campaign manager and publicity
promoter can gel There are many pleasant way s of say-
ing "no," but I guess that isn't so when a guy gets a
little btt disappointed In his efforts to dig up ammunl-

cil electloo, and I therefore had no occasion to make the
mild boast that the Ensign did better than either of it s
great big powerful neighbor newspaoers in making recom-
menda1ions to voters. t could have suggested that there
might be some political value In the Ensign; and Indeed,
I am sure tht the Ensign made en~~ difference In the
_,wcfhW'Id-go race In Olsttlct 2 to be a decisi ve factor.
