An ACKING THE RIGHT TO CRITICIZE
Mrs. R.O. Broyles' criticism of Mrs. Sam Scnulm .. at
last week's elementary school board meeting Is based
on reason lng somewhat as follows: "Whoever crl tiel zes
school textbooks or school board policy Is an enemy of
schools."
Such reasoning reminds me of the classic example so
often used by Or. Fred Schwarz, director of the Chflst-
1.., Anti-Con'lftunlsm Crusades. He says that the attad
on the consffVatlve cause can "be likened to ;n accu~
atJon a~lnst a fire flc11ter as being the enemy of the
!liming oouse. The critic of textbooks and policy is an
enemy of poor textbooks and questionable policy, not an
enemy of schools.
Mrs. Broyles' reasoning, carried to its Illogical coo-
elusion, is that there should be no criticism, at least
In the realm of education, and those who do criticize
are being disloyal
I am personally aware of this state of mind, as a result
of my own reviews of textbooks. I was told ttlat evalu-
ation of textboo6:s should be ltft to the experts (the
eltlcators them sel vesl and also that I was not bel ng
"constructive." The textbooks I reviewed were, in my
opinion, objectionable, and it is a constructive move to
let the tax-paying public know what they are paying for
and tD seek to get better textbooks.
Certainly the folks who pay the bills, throu~ heavy
taxation, have a ri~t to examine what they are buying
and to criticize what they don't lllce and to try to buy
better products.

Here Is a sudden Interesting thou~t: What would these
critics of 1tlt crltlcs say If 'larry Goldwater's "Coo-
science of a ~servatlve" v.ere adopted as a school
textbook! I do believe that their resistance to criticism
would vanish In the flte and smoke of an all-out attack
on sucn a choice of textbook. • • • CONSERVATISM IS BETTER THAN SE:NIORITY
1 am disappointed In state Senator John Murdy, wtto
has built a reputation for conservatism, fo r coming out
v.lth an endorsement of U.S. Senator Tom Kuchel as the
Republic~ candidate for renomination.
Senator Murdy's argument Is that "we cannot replace
Tom Kuchel In Washington v.ith a newcomer; we must
not throw away his valuabl e seniority ."
Seniority Is not 3 sound reason for supporting a candi-
date who professes to be a Rej)ublican, yet follows much
of the New Frontier policy of the Kennedy 4dmlnistra-
tlon. A "New Frontier Republican" can do all the more
damage to the R~publican cause by having "valuable
seniority." I believe we should have a staunch conserY-
atlve Republican In there fi9'1ting for that Senate seat,
and we have such a candidate in Howard Jarvis.

HE DOESN'T SEEM TO KNOW THE ENEMY
Which would you consider to be the greater threat to
U.S. security and public lnterest-CastrJ In Cuba, or the
U.S. steel in<llstry"? It is absurd even to ask such a
(J.Iestion-but which one was the target of the violent
anger of President Kennedy anj threat of massive retali-
ation"? You know the answer: steel was the victim.
This eye-opening analysis of President Kennedy's
philosophy was made by publisher Don Carpenter in a
recent editorial in his Montrose :..edger. Mr. Carpenter
said that suppose Mr. Kennedy had finally taken notice
of "Cuber" on the map, called in a few of his advisers,
and said, "Threaten Castro with reprisals. Tell him he
is a threat to our v.ay of life, and we mean to see that
he no longer consti tutes a threat. Tell him that we v.ill
blockade, boycott, tlacicmail, coerce and bludgeon him
or anyone who stands against the best interests of th e
United States."
~ut that i s just supposing, and what did happen was
Quite to the contrary . H~rc is the way Mr. Carpenter
