I t IS dismaying and di sappointing to hear the com-
ments on the canc ellat1on of the visit of th e commu-
n•sts to Orange Coas t College.
Almost as with on e voice, those who expressed re-
gret at the cancellation set up a flimsy s tra"' man,
and then demolished the s traw man to total destruc-
tion.
The ea sil y demolished straw ma n was the accusa-
tion that "bi gots" and "insecure agita tors" opposed
the exchange o f vi sitors becau se of fear that the com-
munists might influence the thinkin g of college stu-

I ctm one of the "bigots" who oopose the so-called
"cui wral exchange" with the communists . In conver-

Congressman Judd points out another peril in the
exthange: "We wi ll lose, not win, In this exchange
of persons If the Americans who go over and see that
the ordinary peopl e are frl end I y conclude that there-
fore we can relax and trust the communist rulers."
That i s one of the conmunists' purposes for th e ex-
change: to put up a good front for the American visi-
tors and disarm them with smiles and show places.
Her e are comments on cultural exchange from the
American Bar Association special COrTlflli ttee on com-

TIME TO RAISE A FUSS ABOUT FREEWAY
When you talk to the state highway men about th e
location of the Freeway through Newport-costa Me sa-
Corona del Mar, they say that we've got so much traf-
fic here that the Freeway is a must, and that the Free-
way must go right along the coast because drivers
won't use it if i t is a couple of miles inl and.
There's certainly truth in th e first part of that argu-
ment-we've got lots of traffic; the rest of the argu-
ment is non sense.
Handling our own traffic problems is our own con-
cern. The state has no obligation or right to help. The
state, through its own survey, revealed that 85" of
the traffic on Coast Hwy . in this area is local traf-
fic. Let us sol ve that headache by ourselves, and let
the state by-pass the 15~ with a Coastcll Freeway
constructed where it logical ly and economically be-
longs, far enough Inland to go around the Upper 9ay
and avoid all the wonderful residential developmen t
i n the Harbor Area.
lt is nonsense to say that the Freeway will not be
used properly i f it 9oes a couple of miles Inland.
Throu~ traffic wi ll use it. A driver that gets on in
the Los Angeles area certainly will stay on it on his
way down ttle coast beyond our town.
It is preposterous to say that our city needs a Free-
way.lf the need Is here, then consider how many hun-
dreds of thounnds of miles of additional Freeways
will be needed for afl the other cit ies of similar slu
and larger.
