continues to defend the morbid contents of the Crest,
ttle sb.Jdent literary magazine.
OCC Trustee Donald Hoff, faculty advisors Laur-
ence Lieberman and '3ruce Piner and student editor
Harvey Sheleny tried to give justification for the Crest
at the Orange County Press Club meeting last Thurs--
day evening. Their main line of defense! is that we
must be sure to evaluate "both sides," and also that
we are not really Qualified to judge art and li terature.
This attitude represents a surrender of self-reliance
and responsibility, and it is typified by the hopeless
Query: "How do you know what is truth'?"
This is the cult of "expertism," Nh ich calls on us
to rely on experts for moral as Nel l as factual jud~
menl This undermines our confidence in our own
ability to recognize truth, beauty and decency.

listen to the experts, the Corps of '=ngineers, for jud~

think we have the right to argue against the Corps of
S:ngineers,'' he remarked. ~rom the auci ence came
cries of "I do"-giving evidence that some folks at
least are not surrendering to the experts and are re-
taining for themselves the right to look for facts and
arrive at condusions. Perhaps they were recalling
times in the past when out of town experts have gotten

!\long with the "what is ltuth'" argument goes the
plea to we igh "both sides" '>f the Question. Of course
we must consider all the facts, but I am reminded of
the humorous observation that "he who keeps open
mind on all things gets a lot of garbage thrown in."
I am rem1nded also of the atory of the minister giv-
ing an excellent sermon on doctrines of the r:hristian
fa1th and call1ng on the congregation to accept the
Saviour. Just as members o f the congregation were
aborJt to come forth to make their decision, the minis--
ter said, "Now I'll give you the !)evil's s1de of the
argument."
The POint that I am try1ng to make is that we all
have an 1nd1vidual obligation to seek the ltuth, also
that there are certa1n areas where our minds must be
made u~. and closed to the "both S1des" argument.
~or example my mind is absolutely closed on the
conviCtion that the capi taliStiC system of free enter-
pn se IS superior to soc1alism and commun1sm. My mind
IS also closed on the affirmation of the Chri stian
fa1th and acceptance of Jesus Christ as my Lord an d
Saviour. I bel1eve absolutely 1n the great mo ral ltuths,
such as th e one that says "thou shalt not steal."
Please note that the Commandment allows no exceP-
tion, it does not say "thou shalt not steal exce'lt for
a worthy cause."
It is time to stand up for moral values and to resist
the continu1ng efforts to take aNay our obl, gation to
seek those truths.
