c.,. You Tell Ynlidt One h The EmM~ist?
Those of us who are .vei l acquainted wittl John
Smiltl, councilman of Costa Mesa, were amazed at the
shrill and abusive voice of the ~osta l,lesa paper
attacking Mr. Smith.
That ty pe of vituperation could be shrugged off as
th e unpredictable explosion of an extremist, bot it
also deserves a bi t of analysis. 'Vhat' s got under the
Slobe-Herald-Pilot's skin? It may be that they can't
st;r,d some of the things that l-.4r. Smith stands for: He
is a staunch conservative and patriot, dedicated to
the preservation of our constitutional republic and
therefore a determin ed opponent of the appeasers and
accommodators and anti-anti-communists. He is a de-
vout Christian, in the true Biblical meaning of that
word. He has considerable stature in his commun1ty
and beyond, as ev idenced oy the oositions of re-
SPOnsibility he has held. He is soft-sr><>ken mild man-
nered, and a gentleman.
John Smi ttl is a former mayor of r:osta ~.! esa. no .v 1 s
serving as counc ilman. He was honored as church
m;r, of the year. He IS president of the Harbor \rea
Boys Club, a di rector of the r:osta Mesa <•Hanis
~lub, a di rector of the Mesa United Fund, ana vice-
president of his church council. Fo r 2 years he held
the offi ce of president of the Orange ~ounty League
of Cities.
~gainst th is record o f service and dedication to Sod
and country , what does the ~osta r.lesa newspaper
have to offer., They do run editorials in th e general
category of being for youth, motherhood and the aged,
;r,d in favor of fly ing the flag on the ~ou rth of July-
but more part icularly a consistent devotion to the
cause of the anti-anti-communist line.
It Has John Smi th's Press Club soeech that brought
the wr ath of the Glo be-Herald-Pilot on h1s head. He
read the speech from a orepared text so there would
not lhe thought) be any distortion 1n the manner 1n
Hhich it Has reported. The ta lk wa s a brief, calm,
Hell-reasoned di scu SSt ')(I o f the Crest, the 0 range
":oast r.ollege l1 terary magaz1ne. H1s main theme was
that 'lr Oasil Peterson as the head of the college,
DOCS have resnons1bility for the quali ty of the ma-
terial pmduced 1n ltle college. Tile truth of that state-
ment IS so self-ev1dent that 1t should not need argu·
ment.

Leave Our Schools
Alone, John Smith
There it is again-the unmistakable
bowl of b)'lteria.
And there be 1J again-Costa Mesa
City Councilman John Smith, howUng
louder and shriller than anyone as he
plants the banner of destructive discord
atop another peak or emotion.
The purported object of the current
wave of hysteria is "Crest," Orange Coast
College's student literary magazine. But
the real object, it appears from Smith's
torrent of words, is Orange Coast Col·
lege itself, OCC President Bull Peterson
and aU our schools here in th.ia area.
John Smith took the trouble last\
,. ~ek to volunteer his services for an ap·
reJrance before the Orange County Press
L'lub to offer criticism of Cresl His
attack on the magazine, however, was uv"er~hadowed by his bitter denunciation
of Dr. Peterson and the college in gen·
eral.
Crest, it appeared, was Just an ex·
cuse to cast doubt upon the integrity of
a fine, moral and outstanding educator
and to cast suspicion on one of the best
;unior colleges in America.
Crest is far from a perfect publica·
!JOn. It is a collection of attempted hter·
ary and art work by OCC students who.
hke most budding college-age writers.
have a sense of foreboding about the
world's future and dote on T S. Ellot.
Their wnting too rJften displays th1s
hopeless outlook These young writers
tand a few of them are goodl also use
a convenient method of masking theu·
tnsecurity with "ords by ullhzang shock
o~nd "far out" plots. characters or end·
ings.
£n fa ct. Crest is immature. In spots
1t ts s1!1_v It 1s. no particular credtl to
mstructors or students of Orange foa~l
College. But taken in context by a well·
adjusted mature mind. Crest is not un-
,-\mencan. ant1 -Sem•tac or antl·!':egt o It
bas been accused of being all three.
Some of it is in questionable taste.
This would better not have been pub-
lished. But it emanated from a very few
students and should not be construed
representative of lhe student body as a
whole.
Dr. Peterson and the OCC board
have acknowledged that publication or
Crest was leas than the most discreet act
in the coUege's history. They'~ re-
evaluating the situation and those of us
who know Dr. Peterson know he w1ll
resolve the question with fairness to the
writers, the student body, the faculty-
and the' taxpayers.
That it will be resolved matters not
to John Smith and his howling band.
They're out for bigger game than the
Crest staff and its advisers. They're out
(or the college and Dr. Peterson
Even il Crest were all the t1l ings it
Is accused of being. its sins should not
blur the significa nt quality and accom-

1s one of the most respected junior col·

~uperior scholastically. It has enriched
lhe lives or thousands of adults who have
taken evenmg courses It has an above-
average fa culty. It has contributed great·

John Smtth chooses to ~~wore these
accomplishments. He ~·ants his brand

"How about getting to your typewriters and ralsJng
a little hell!" remarked a newspaper publisher at a
recent meeting of fellow publishers. He was calling
attention to the bfeakdown of moral s tandards and lle
prese11tation of objectionable material In the theatr e
and in print. and he was asking editors all over the
nation to do something about i l
1 ttl ink it is ti me ttlat all citize11s do something
a bout il And here in the Harbor ~rea, perhaps It may
be a relatively Insignificant venture in literary effort
on the Orange Co ast Coll ege campus that may gener-
ate the drive for de~ency.
t have already heard a number of shocked and angry
comments on the morbid nature of ttle contents of the
"Crest," the college literary magazine. I will agree
that students have ttle ri<jlt to write as they please
iW'td to publish their writings-If it is done at their own
expense and not by means of taxpayers' funds. 13ut
the students, and ttleir advisors, and the college It-
self, must be aware of the fact ttlat the students' pro-
ductions are a measure of the mo ral s tandards being
developed in· the school.
If it we re the case of a private school, all that a
protesting suPPorter need to do is to withdraw his
support and use his contribution where he knows It
will go for a good, moral caus e. In the case of a tax-
supPOrted school, the taxpayer is like a captive,
wlttlout recourse except to voice protests . There Is
one other recourse. and that is to wittlhold approval
of bond issues or tax over-rides. It would be enl l<jlt-
ening to know what would be the verdic t of the vo-
ters if the Oran ge Coast College tax oveNide Issue
would be on the ballot ri<jlt now, following the recent
incident of the visit of the CO(Tlmunists and now ltle
incident of the "Cresl"
Ty pical comment on ltle writings and sketches in
thi s magazine was this one: "Is ltli s how public edu-
cation is training our ctllldren.,''
tt is an added shock to learn that the magazine is
defended by the school trustees and th e school presi-
dent, who seem to ask the same question posed by
Pontius Pilate almost 2,000 years ago, "What is
truth?"-as though we are not supposed to have the
moral judgment to determine good from evil,
There IS more to this controversy than poor judg-
ment and poor taste. Robert Young's offensive s tory
about "The Pet" places the family at the bfeakfast
table, giving th;r,ks to our lord in the traditional
statement of Grace, and from there they go fo rth tD
commit indignities ltlat make mockery of the gesture
of faittl . It is a blasphemous attack on ~hristian
principles, degrading the glorious doctr ines of the
Christl an fai ttl.
The board of trus tees and ttle college president
should humbly offer an aPOlogy to the public for this
desecration of faith.
