Thus I have participated direct- ly with the growth of the C:nsign, and also have watched the ~owth of the 'ilobe-Herai~Pilot, from an Independent weekly, to tri-weekly, to a dally oper- ation, then leaving the field of Independent journalism to become patt of the L os Angeles Times organiz- ation. I have heard from many sides the criticism of news- papers, and I have seen the basis of these criticisms typified by growing Globe-Herald-Pilot tactics of In- nuendo and invective against objects of their dis- pleasure. The object of di spleasure is emerging more and more clearly as the conservative cause, which is becoming increasingly the target o f attack in their editorial columns. Many of you can remember some of the unprincipled editorial tirades of the past in the 'ilobe Herald. There was the county supervisor election back in lQ'iA, when a last minute stab in the back was made against cand idate ~oy Maypole of Corona del Uar. You may remember the libelous hints of sinister tie-In w ith undesirable elements, the equally malicious chatges of "perfidy," "fraudulent propaganda," shabby, contemptibl e campaign," "unscrupulous d is- tortion of facts," all I eve I ed against a candidate who was threatening the re-election of the Globe Herald candidate. There was equally malicious editorializing in the 1q6l Newport '3each Elementary School ')l stti ct elec- tion. The t;l obe-Herai~Pilot, lacking the fortitude to nam e their victim, gave sly warning of "a dangerou s Ca'ldida~," very obviously referring to a staunch con- servative who was one of the candidates for trustee. There was no effort to provide facts or proof of any sort, only unfounded hints and innuendo. Still fresh in our memory is the vitriolic attack, sur- prising even for the 'ilobe-Herald-Pilot, against one of the outstanding citi zens and civic I eaders of t:osta Mesa, Councilman and former r.Aayor John Smith. Th e reason for that incredible disregard of journalistic ethics was Mr. Smith's criticism of the Orange t:oast College (:rest, and of O(:C President 1asil Peterson for the degrading quality of the writings in the student pu~ ication. The t:rest was not condemned by the ';lobe-Herald-Pilot; but r::ouncilman Sm ith wa s, for daring to critici ze the lack of basic decency and di9- nity in the magazine. Innuendo and news slant•ng are again evident in the Slobe-H era ld-P ilot treatment of the news development concern ing the Supreme Court prayer decision, the visit of 2 of th e j ustices to Newport '3each, and th e pick ets protesting Tue sday's breakfast meeting. There was first the feverish effort to l ink the John Bi rch Society wi th the protest against the justices. The John Birch Society is protesting, all right, but does not partictpate in ptclceting. So the attack had to turn against the prot esting pickets themselves in an attempt to discredit them and to frighten them away from their proJect On e of the tactics was the pub- lished warn1ng that the Globe-Herald-Pilot Noul d be there to take pictures. Taking pictures is a routine is a routine journalistic procedure; giving advance "wpN:l"'n" is not. 1 noted no such warning in the r" HURR' "'-• a9~i~ st, for exampl e, the peace ~-., t week-end, or against -· upon our area dur ing e Balboa 1ay Club MOf4ZA (l UI COV'f 10 IN STOCil On the pickets' Slo- Ont: ot tht , -·. je the snide remark , "I wonder how long it has ~n since those pickets have said grace at their table." That brought to my mind the quest ion, did the Globe-Herald-Pilot raise any protest when the OCC Crest blasphemed our Lord? That blasphemy had to do with saying grace at the table, but there was no reproof hom r::osta Mesa news- paper. t know almost all of the participants in Tues- day's pro~st against the Sopreme Court decisions, and 1 know them to be strong In their faith, far beyond lillY evidence shown In the columns of the Costa Mesa paper.
