It remains 10 be seen how firm is the announcement made
last week dl&t a coastal route for a freeway baa been aban-
doned. Let's hope at is soina to stick.
The F.nsagn. used up a lot of Log space durins the put
months poin tin& out the absurdity of bulldozing a freeway
lh10usb the masnificent residential development in the New-
port llarbor Area. I do not recall any support from the other
2 Harbor "rea papers or from my of our :-.1 ewport i)each
city offi cials for lhe effort ~ move the freeway route in-
land. In fact. Jay <itoddard, then our mayor, remarked that
1 wu being mighty unrealistic trying to buck the highway
enJjneers-and most everyone else, it then seemed.
ilut as for now-let's es tablish that route out there in the
bean fields.

Like a doting parent to ~ard an only child, the defender of
lhe Unated :-.Jauons seems to have eyes and ears closed to
the many serious defec ts and shortcomings of this ~orld
organi zataon.
There seems to be an emotional blindness that shuts off
all vasa on of U:-.1 fau lures and U~ deeds that actually en-
danser our furure as a free, independent republic.
I am Jisappoanted an the decasion of Mayor Charles Hart of
Newport Beach to proclaim United ~ations Day. The procla-
mation as actually a subtle propaaanda piece endeavoring
to color the U'll an favorable light, seeking to picture it as
a vigorous anrl effecove instrument for peace and coopef"'
ation.
I suuest readang a few e'cerpts from "The War in ''a-
tanga," dte report of a ma ssaon to dae Congo by Prof. Em-
est van den llaag, to show some of the shockmg results o f
the UN in action:(You rn ay get dae full report from the .>\mer-
acan Committee for <\id to !o(atanga Freedom Fighten, 79
'•ladison -\ve., ~ew York 16, ~. Y., for Sl.50.)
But. a s \1orrie Ryskand warned an a column in the L . <\.
Times, only those with strong stomachs should attempt to
diaest the report, "for the record is clear that the ri&hteous
forces o f the U:-.1 have be en gual ty of deli berate rnurder of
unatmeJ, non-combatant cavalaans, tnc tudins women and
children. rape of wha te<~ and blacks alake; wanton destruc-
tion of churches and holtpatals, and lootang and arbitrary
anosts."
And more: The Un ated <;tates was aiding a U~ mi litary
attack on a peaceful, orderly people led by Christian-eck.a-
cated \1oa se lshombe, an acuvely pro-western and anta-
oomrmnast leader an the Conso. The U~. with our support,
is promoting dle cause of the central government of the
ConsP, a ¥Ovemment clearly communist-dominated.
llle UN took no actaon in defense of libeny when Soviet
comn~IHSt forces brutally crushed the freedom fighters in
Hungary, nor when '•lao's commllnists took over all of main-
land China, nor when :-.lehru's "neutralist" India. invaded
little Goa. nor when communist Castro took over Cuba, no r
now when communist '{unaa is annina Castro. The UN ,
