By Johft Vi.,ll"t The Coloniata of Anaheim appeared to be on their way to another Sunaet Leaaue crown u they downed New- port Harbor 1• to 0 in Pirate Stadium Friday niaht. Anaheim received the kick- off and wu apparently ato~ ped by a touah Newport de- fenae, but with fourth down and s yarda to ao. they paued to the 1-yard line and 1 down later acored. The PAT at- tempt failed, and the Sailor offeDie did the aame. Newport quick kicked on third down, and 3 playa later Anaheim broke looae eroood left end for a <4&yard touch- down run. In the thirdquarter the New- port offenae apin failed, and the Sailors were forced to kick. Anaheim then drove 53 yarda to pay dirt. (n a powerful ahow of de- fense, Newport wu able to hold the Coloniats when they nut receaved the bell, but to no avail when 1 fair catch of an Anahe1m punt was drop- ped, and Anaheim recovered. The Sailor defense held aaa&n, but 1n a very few min- utes the Colon1ata apin had the bell and sprinted 3S yards for ano ther touchdown. Newport was able to p1n a little yardaae w&th quarter· beck anealta. but these plays reaulted in the IDJUIY of Steve Shedd. Both the firat and sec- ond atrina quarterbecka are aidelined with mjunea, and Wade Peauon, the No. 1 full- beck, is a till ailina. That's Otis Chandler, boy publisher of the Los .o\nseles Times, no w also owner of bQth the Costa \1esa Globe-Henld-Pilo t and the Newport Harbor News Preu. ~d so it i 1 that the pioneet newspapet of the Harbor -\rea is the Ensi,n ... because the histori c 3 1obe Herald name hu become merely small type an the masthead on paiJe -4 of the Costa Mesa Daily Pilot ... and the hastoric News Preas name has been combined wath the Newport )each edition of the Costa '.4esa Daily Pilot, and undoubtedly, in time wall likewise JO in that sm all type an the Palo t' masthead. That leaves tho Ensi&n as the only Newport 'leach news- paper, for the Costa Mesa Palot is no more a Newport paper than the New Yo ric Times is a Southern Cali foma a paper by vinue of aetona out a West Coast eda uon. For all pra ctical purposes, one entire newspaper of the Hatbor Area has ceased to exi sL There remains the :-.lew- port edition of the Costa \1esa newspaper, an addition to the Pilot ttsclf, just as there was before the latest meraer, 1nd the former 3-times-a-week :-.lews Preas is just a memory -linserin& in the name s till carried alonaside the name o f the Pilot. Picking Oft the W""'g G.ya The promoters of metal health proa.rams are qua ck to deny that there is danaer to civil liberties an lepslation al ready on the books and an law s beana proposed. However, there have been 5everal fraahtenin& eJt8Tiples of the manner an wha ch mental health laws have been used to silence and to discredit opposiuon. The Gen. Edwin Walker cue an \1assassippa as the most recent e~:ample, 111d thaa case puts the spotli&ht on the arave danaer inherent in the terrible powers that mental health le&islation &ives to IIU· thontaes. Gen. Walker apparently has no leaal recourse ~ oo rrect the damaae done by wronaful accusation of posai bl e mental illness. The liberal es tabliahment has been suc- cessful, wathout fear of punashmeot, an cutin& doubts on the mental soun dness of Gen. Walker, and thus seekin& to destroy a conservative, patriotic American. The danaer an mental health lesi•lauon ltes an the fact that the au thon ty in power can tag the opposit.Jon as mental cases and therefore liable for compulsory treatment as men- tally unstable. "They are," he wrote, ''well atona the road toward mental iltneaa." eon.;der the words of Oranae County' I chief spokewnan for a mental health proaram, Or. Norm1n NiMn. He has -denied 0\ere is any "sinister plot aaainsl the Ameri can people," yet with surprisina frankness he has aiven us reattOn to be concerned. In his newspaper oolumn 6 months aao he wrote, ''The mi sunderatandin1 (of those who oppose di e mental health movement> reflects the aao-old fear o f mentally disturbed per10ns." Thus the opponents of mental health laws alttO must be on "the road to mental illness."
