li1bed. Tbia wa• the re1ult of the purcb.aee of our local newepaper by
my medical auociAte, Dr. Avery, 3Uld myeel!.
We entered into the newepaper bu.aine11 for a number of rea10n1. Nat-
urally the Hut and foremo•t wa• that of maint.aiAioa a profitable bu•i-
nell. Second, we felt that the town needed, and bad not been aettina,
impartial adequate coveraae of local newa event• and af!ah • vital to
the health of the town. We felt that the people of Peco• bad been ex-
po•ed, unduly, to the ultra-liberal point of view, not only on the edi-
torial paae but al•o throuabout the entire paper. It wae our intention
to pre1ent, and I think we have eucceeded ln pre•entina, to the people
of Pec:oe a !air, impartial, UDbiaaed n...,• covera1e ln all eectione of
the paper with the exception o{ the editorial pal•· On that paae we
re1erved the riaht to pre1ent the con•ervative viewpoint. I would not ••Y that we were radical about it, but among the regular feature• were
column• by Barry Coldwater, David Lawrence, Paul Harvey, and Tom
Anderaon.

member that Peco• i• a 1t&u.nch De.rnocratic etronahold. Ite ch1ef

We had a feehna at the paper that there wa• •ome dieaareement tn the
town with our free-enterpri•e philoeopby!
In January of 1961, the City of Peco• .-nployed a new cbieC of pohc e.
After he wae hired be came by to •ee me and I wa• pleaeantly aurpn•ed
to find that be had been a c:olle1e frle.nd o{ mine aome fifteen yeare aao.
He di d not know the town or the people, ao he aaked 1f I would aerve ae
hie polic e 1uraeon and lend whatever aaai•tance 1 could unt 1l be became
better a cquainted w ith the town. I aareed to t.hi• arrangement and waa
i11ued a full police commi11ion and furniabed with a two-way car radio
by the •herilf. Thi • worked out quite well ae long •• my r ole coneiated
of furni1bing free medical care when needed in the courae of rouune
police work.. There wae a 1trong feeling, however, that my a ch v1t1e a
exceeded thoee normally furni1hed by a polle e eurgeon.
Unfortunately, aleo, our new police chief had 1everal quahhel o r char-
ac teriatic• which proved to be h tgbly undel&rable fo r a c tty auch aa
Peco1. Firet, he wa• completely and unalterably ho neat. Second, he
believed in law enforcement rathe r than 1n merely "keep1ng the peace. '
He had an ~ocanny ability to •mell out corruption and c rune, AJ~d a very
excellent education and trainina in modern inveattgattve work and law
enforcement. Soon we were working on a number o( rather ampo rtant
local problema, inc ludtng traffic tn narcotlca, barbttuatea, benn•e• and
alcohol; ar1on, loc al corruption involvtng pay-oHa and fraud; and nu-
meroua other heme, including the illegal acttvitiea of Mr. Eatea.
In the •prtna of 19b 1 M r, E 1tee ran !o r the ach oo1 board on the platfo rm
of Federal Aid To Education , elimination of all danc&ng at any school
(unction•, and rather marked lowering of the 1kirt1 of the cheer leaders
and band majorette• (which oflendecl hl• piou• m ode•ty). Hu campatcn
manager, our preeent ~yor, approached the editor of our pap~r (lht»
wa• before Eatea etarted hi• own paper) with the oHer of $S, 000 wo rth
of adverthing ll we would not oppo1e E1tea. He knew we would not~
po rt Eat••· Thh wa• an1wered the next day w ith a well wo rded ed&torla l
entitled "Not For Sale, " E1te1 wa• deJeated by a write-tn candidate.
Thie did not endear u• to my old buddy, eo be decided the tune had
come to put ln a daily paper and put Ul in our place ••••• that beina
completely out of Pecoe.
