The suggestion for one-way traffic on Corona del Mar
streets has been received with aJmost unanimous opposi-
tion. An l nfonnal .,d quite unofficial opinion poll has
PfOciJ ced the following results: 1q businessmen, all
~posed; 60 local residents, about 90~ opposed. The
businessmen say that one-way streets will hurt their
business, because it will make i t harder for CtJstomers
10 drive near the shops. The residents say that there is
no congestion on the si de streets, that the congestion is
on Coast H wy .; therefore there is no reason to tamper
wittt the residential streets. The sentiment appears to be
qu i te conclusive.

WHY THE OPPOSITION AGAINST PTA?
The resistance to PT~. as shown at the PT~ organ iza-
tion meeting at Corona del Mar High School, cannot be
di smissed with a rem ark about "troubl e makers" or
"splinter group." Th e opposition is considerable, a1d it
represen{s a growing concem and awareness aoout the
con trol of national organizations by the liberal establish-
ment The control reaches into labor, church groups, pro-
fessional organizations. and the government i t self. as
well as schools a1d PT 4's. The objective in each case
appears to be th~ s~e: drumming up real or fa1 ci ed sup..
port for policies promoted by ttte liberal establishment.

Interest in the local schools and membership in a local
parent-facul ty organization are the prime concem of those
who sought to organ ize a P~O at Cr:lM Hicj: School (just
as with the parents who org<W~i zed th e first P~O in the
Harbor Area, at Mariners School. and those who formed
the PFO at HarbOr View Schooll. They realize tttat the
tru e worth o f any group is in local control, responsive to
local needs and local opinion.
It is rather preposterous to think that staunch conser-
vatives and patriots should be required to help ~ather
policies which they veh emently oppose. Just consider
th ese 3 examples: Suppo rt of the Uni ted Nations, wtl i ch
to us conservatives means the subordination of our na-
tion's soverei<Jl ty and freedom; support of federal aid to
e<lJcation, which to us means less and l ess local control
over our schools. support of compulsory fluoridation of
public water supplies, which would intrude the doctrine
of maJOri ty rule into a field that should remain a mattet
of Individual cho1ce.

These 3 -Umted Nations, federal aid, and fluori dation
-are al l champ1oned by National PTA. With the very few
exceptions of local P(:O's, parents have to join a PT ~
or join nothing, and to join a PT ~ and pay the ooes as
prescribed means supporting those national policies.
Conservative paren ts wish to particirate in their child-
ren's sch.,ols just as much as do liberal paren ts. No
wonder there IS a growing 1nterest in a strictly local
parent-faculty group.
But what's th e choice for the parent Nho has no1'(:0
to jo1n and Nho has to choose between PT~ or nothing?
I had JUSt such a choice th1 s year-the first time that 1
trult becar.,e el1 g1ble for r1ernberst1ip by virtue of having
a child rn scho'll. ~fter all these years of editoriali zing
against the 'proJects 'l'lentioned above, I would consider
i t JUSt stlort .,, treason to contribute even a few oenni es
to further such causes. It 1s with cons•derable pride that
I hold my first 'Tlerrtbership in the PT~ o f "my school,"
and th~t • s JUSt the Nay i t 1S because I deducted the
amount of money fro-n fT'Y dues that would have been sent
