LET'S HOT HELP THEM BURY US
A law calling for a thousand dollar license fee to sell
communist goods in our local stores Is not the answer
br such folly. There should be no need for le9islation.
Sound bu"siness sense should provi de the answer. Sell-
ing goods p10cilced 1n commun1 st coun tries may eam the
shopkeeper a few easy dollars, but it eM~ l ead only to
dl saster
The reason Is well stated 1n the l etter rece1ved by the
Newport Beach City Coun cil from the Orange County
Comm1ttee to Wam of the Arrival of r:ommun i st Imports:
"Support of communist trade enables the puppet bosses
of the communist nations to increase their bru tal tyranny
over their enslaved workers, i t has put literally hundreds
of -\merican factor~es In Jeopardy and Cal endanger huge
seCJTlents of the ~merican labor force."
Anyone dealing in communist goods is simply furthering
the promise of Khru shchev to bury us.

LIBRARIANS DEFEND A SHOCKING BOOK
librarians in Orange Coun ty and Los ~ngel es Sounty
are defending the di sttlbution o f a shocking, blasphemous,
salacious book entltl ed "The L ast Temptation of t:hri st."
The book IS sacrileg1ous beyond belief for those who
have received Jesus t:hrist as their personal Saviour.
For those who do not beli eve, the book i s stimulating,
powerful, ma<Jllficent -to QUote some of the reviews
Mid comments.
~t a recent meeting of the Public Library Executi ves
t..ssn. of Southern r:allforni a, 1t was stated by L .~. coun-
ty librarian John Henderson that the librari ans present
seemed agreed that they should not bow to any pressure
to ban the book.
L.A city l1brarian Harold Hamill said he joined "with
other ltbrarians i n feeling 1t woul d be a very real crime
aga inst society to remove ttli s book from our shel ves."
He did agree that the book is apparently "irritating or
offensive to those with a strictly conventional point of
view''
By ''convent1on al " he must mean those who bell eve in
Jesus r::h r~st as "a la-nb without blemi sh Mid without
iPOt," (!Peter l·}q), ''wM d1d no s1n, ne1ther was guile
found 1n h1s mou th," (Peter 2:21, 22l, "Nho gave h1mself
a ran snll" fo r all" (I Timothy 2:1>), as "propitiation for
)U I SlflS" 'I JOhn 4 }())
T'le ',JVII)Ur 1n '~11ros <azantzalces' degrading book IS
depl eted as a man, "a m<Y~ tl f the people, sorely tempted
to g1ve up hts dedication to a super-humM~ ideal Mid
setttP OONn to a Ide of haop1ness" ... "capable, like all
men ')! ·~1 v1ng Nay to anger, depression Mtd moments of
co wardice" whom "temptation had capb.J red for a spl1t
second and l ed h1m astray."
r:ol"'m ent'ary 1ncluded 1n the back of the book states
that 1t IS paramount for the author "that Jesus be con-
stan t1 y tempted by evil in such a Nay that he feel its
attractiveness and even succumb to 1t."
fh1 s 1 s blasphemy against our Lord, who, "being made
perfect, became the author of eternal salvation unto all
them that obey him.'' CHebrews S:q). Soc:tl precious pro-
mise must be unknown to those that would write a book
degrading our Lord, and to those that would defend i t.
Our Lord has given us free will to do good o r evil, so
those who w1sh to read books like this one have the
right to do so. Rut we who do believe in our•Lor<t must
not be made to take part In this evil th10u~ ou r enforced
support o f ou r public libtartes.

There is a nautical note to the tune for
Santa's Season in Old Newport. The Heart
of the Harbor area is beating in a new
rhythm with the beauty that has been spot-
ted in the area between Newport and Bal-
boa Boulevards near the Newport Pier.
Santa Claus has arrived and he is situat-,
ed high on the snout of a great blue whale.
The power is furnished by Eight Sea Horses
end it is all from Newport Bay.
There has been a lot of cooperation to
provide Christmas Cheer and a chuckle
for you ~nd your young ones. And there
is a touch of kindness extended by the
gteeting and purpose of the Zonta Club
Christmas Tree which is located on the
Grounds of the Bay and Beach Realty Co.
There 'II be other Christmas decorations
throughout our community and all along
the Orange County Coastline with its"~
Miles of Christmas Smiles". Enioy the
beauty created by your neighbors and
townspeople ~nd neighboring towns-
people too.
We wish to particularly thank a man
from Texas who made the display of the
Whale possible. It was his harpoon which
held the great blue whale all season for
the youngsters at Newport Dunes, and it
was his generosity which made possible
the use of "Moby Dick" for the nautical
Santa 's Sleigh. The southern mammoth of
the sea has been pulled ashore by eight
"
Su Horse brothers of the real live kind
from our own· Newport Bay. The Texan is
Col. D. H. Byrd, owner of Newport Dunes.
When you come to see the beauties of
the giant Zonta Christmas Tree remember
I -v---
to bring a gift, a toy, or food, which the
women of Zonta wt11 tum over to the New-
port Harbor Lodge of Bks for distribution
to families ~o have been overtaken by
adversity and misfortune.
There is a program at the Zonta Tree
every Friday and Sanrday until Christmas
and that makes an ideal time to visit the
area where the Whale and Sea Horses
serve Santa.
The greatest gift of our great way of
life is SHARING.
We in the Hardware Store have gather-
ed more than a sleicjh load of atiNctive
items for home and yard and shop and
;ust plain enioyment. Come in and look us
over.
We have t.ghts and festoons and decor-,
ations for the inside and the outside of
your home so that you may ioin in the sea·
sonal gaiety and maybe win one of the
traditional awa rds of the Orange County
Coast Assoc iation, sponsor of the ''ai()
Miles of Christmas Smiles".
