WHY All THE FUMING'
I suppose man y of you have wondered: What really is
behind all the ~oound and fury over Rou Cortese's pro·
posed senior citizen development near El Toro? It ap.
pears ~debatable that \1r. Cortese has the riaht to
purchase the land and to develop it. I do not believe
anyone v.i II be coerced into movina into such develop-
ment; that will be a matter of individual choice. I be-
leive that Conaiessman Jimmy Utt has observed cor·
rec tly that "if there is a danaer zone mvolvc:d in the
approach pattern, the Deren se Depar1ment should either
ne&ot iate or condemn the property ri&ht involved, and
ConJieSS "'ill supply the money to pay the damaaes ."
It seems quite preposterous that • senior citizen
colooy would force the \1arines to chanae their Oi&ht
pattern to the much more den sely populated and de.
veloped Harbor Area.
0!'1~_ll0ui~le ex I anauon for all the shoutm& as that

sues. and, after all, the prorerty u Jht of only one m-

Who would Abraham Uneoln t;t~, if ,~.--he were alive today?
Would he believe that all Americans
ere slaves today?
More so, than even those slaves be-
fore the bloody Civil War brought about
emancipation in America.
We're talking about taxes and gov-
emmental enslavement.
Taxes that swallow our profits and
our earnings, confiscate our properties;
put scores of thousands of free enterprise
business undertakings out of operation.
In Lincoln's day a man who earned two
dollars a day was able to take it all home;
or fifty or a hundred dollars a day if he
was able to make that kind of money in
those impoverished times.
There was no withholding tax. Every
penny of wages could be taken home -
for buying bread and butter and shoes
end clothing end shelter: everything else
that the average man needed to provide
for his family.
The term , "take-home-pay," was
spawned by the same aggregation of
bureaucrats who put more faith in social
welfare thao in individual endeavor.
Taxes and social welfare are running
~ race that is certain to carry this nation's
economy over the precipice and into an
abyss of disaster as sure as the day follows
the night unless enough brave patriots
are ioined to stem the tide.
Abraham Lincoln, whose gaunt cour-
age and lonesome but dedicated convic-
tions fearlessly faced one of America's
greatest crises in the 1860's, was a Repub-
lican who faced up to Republican princi-
0 Gil
--pies in t+.e operatior{ of our Democracy. .. ,
These principles, under the Lincoln
standards, never would have condoned a
so-called withholding tax. What party
would claim Lincoln today?
Abe Lincoln would have abhorred
the rationalities employed by many of to-
day's GOP Party followers. By the same
token Thomas Jefferson, that greet lead-
er of the Democratic Party, would have
screamed high treasqn at the inheritors of
the noble traditions he handed down to
his party.
Lincoln and Jefferson both knew the
value of a dollar. They also appreciated
the cherished love that American patriots
have for human dignity, for freedom, for
the sanctity of the home and family.
Along with the birthday of Lincoln,
Feb. 12, we also will observe the birthdays
of two other great American patriots dur-
ing February whose contributions to this
nation's progress are incalculable.
We are thinking of Thomas Edison,
America's great scientist and inventor
whose birthday we observe on Feb. 11,
and George Washington, father of his
country, whose natal day is Feb. 22.
What would Edison have accomplish-
ed in the fields of science and invention
today?
Not so much, we believe, with govern-
ment curbs, restrictions, bureaus, long-
haired experts and other handicaps that
discourage independent operation in cre-
ative fields today.
George Washington was a Republi-
can. Thomas Jefferson was a Democrat.
Both true Americans. Where are their
counterparts in America today? Was Lin-
coin or Eaason a Conservative?
Where do we find a true Republican;
a true Democrat, the kind of men who
stand for the courageous, noble principles
that were the foundation of the_se two
once great political parties.
Polities seem to have fallen into a sad
state. Is President Kennedy really a Dem-
ocra~ was former President Eisenhower a
Republican? Let their records speak for
themselves.
The Lincoln-Jefferson brands of free-
dom were the kind that permitted the
great pioneers of business, science, com-
merce and industry to soar to new heights;
that carried America to new plateaus of
prosperity and worldwide recognition.
It still is a working, forceful means of
worth while accomplishment -the very
best known.
We're pretty sure that yesterday's
Eisenhower philosophy or tod.y's Kennedy
doctrines are separated from their fore-
fathers' blueprints. The plan was for a
Constitutional Republic.
The results of Mr. Edison • s develop-
ments, inventions, research and accom-
plishments are available at the Hardware
Store today. There are appliances to make
your housework easier, cleaner, fresher,
and even brighter through the wonders of
the electric light he harnessed.
It is true many of Mr. Edison's patents
have been improved upon, but, it was his
determined search for and effort to
create a better way_ of life and living that
helps us enioy today's great America.
Happy birtftday to three great Amer-
icans and a V a Ientine Kiss to you!
